Connection at 2.4ghz has all channels overlapping except for 3 of them. Get a wifi app for your phone to find what 2.4ghz channels are not so congested. l |

My cellphone is able to send it's signal over 5 miles to a cell tower so it's not the phone that's limiting the range. Just interesting. Wonder if there is a throttling device in the wifi router that limits it's range. |

Talk to a HAM radio expert. Quoting: Cheeseburgerandfries Its not so much the ‘power’ - its the antenna thats super important. So the cellphone antenna to a cell tower is good but to a wifi router isn't effective. And perhaps the routers antenna is not good at picking up the cellphones signal to it. This is when the cellphone is in wifi mode. This is interesting. Thanks. |

Open up the router, extend the internal cable and fashion a new antenna. Foil, copper and a large picture frame would suffice. |

Cellular radio and wifi radio are two different components in a mobile device, IIRC. Also, this could be an issue of your router having bad coverage (like posters previously alluded to) with congested channels. We had some walls in our house that completely wrecked our WIFI, which made streaming really difficult. This was fixed by adding an extender. |

Then they send and receive signals to massive tall towers all over. Your router has very little antenna and your ipad or whatever has very very little as well for antenna. No comparison really. Cell towers are far more powerful than a home router yeah but another main factor is wavelength. Wifi has either 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency whereas (non-5G) cell towers operate on frequencies under 2GHz. The higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength i.e. higher frequencies travel less distance. |

Your question is like asking "Why can't I connect my cell phone to a tower in Europe"? Routers are SHORT RANGE devices. They are NOT made to carry a a signal a long distance ... and if they did there aren't enough frequencies in the world to support all 40 million of the routers operating simultaneously in the US, forget the entire world. Cell phone signals today are good for line of sight, so 5 to 15 miles is about it depending upon your location and the tower height. The OLD cell phones in the 900mhz range easily go 2x that distance all other things being equal, and could reach 3x that under proper circumstances. That doesn't happen TODAY though now that they changed the frequencies and the the transmission standards. Take the 5 watt power of the old cell phones and put it on another frequency and a couple of other things and VOILA, it will talk from middle America to Europe while as a cell phone it could only talk about 15-30 miles max. Different frequencies different transmission characteristics. 200' from a router is actually very good for a router. Most are more in the 50 foot range. |

For one its bandwidth. Think about when routers were 54mbps what was the speed of 3g phone services at the time hardly anything it was like dial up. Now we have AC Wireless 2250 or whatever on AC the new standard AX does 9.6gpbs. Tighter waves dont travel is far plus it is also a power limitation because of FCC regulations safety and such do you really want a 1000w plus device putting out radio waves in your home 24/7 not a good idea plus the whole harmful interference thing. I mean they have more powerful routers available if you got the money outside of normal consumer level. |
