Largest Burmese python in Florida history discovered in the Everglades

Many years ago where I grew up I knew a family that kept a giant boa.

The daughter - who was my age - loved it and "played" with it all the time. The snake slept in a giant cage in her bedroom.

One day they notice it's starting to change color and get really skinny. They figure it's sick and take it to the vet.

Vet tells them it's starving itself and getting ready to eat the young daughter. Tells the family he has to put it down or it'll eat the girl - and according to the vet once the snake makes up their mind on what they're eating there's no changing it.

They put the snake down and the daughter was terrified of them after that. She actually thought the thing loved her like a dog.

My cousin's live in Florida and down the block they knew a couple who had a snake sneak into the house and swallow their newborn baby during the night - killing it in the process - the mom went into feed it the next morning and found the snake. The husband killed it and cut it open trying to save his child. Obviously it was too late at that point.

These are real stories. Not urban legends.

They are evil incarnate and must be eradicated. The world would do fine without them. A movement towards killing all of them would be wonderful.

These things deserve death and nothing else.

Wow that's a big one! Here in South Africa we also have them, they're a protected species. A guy in the village here once had to shoot one dead, sadly. It was trying to eat their Jack Russel.

‘NAPLES, Fla. – – A record-breaking Burmese python found in the Everglades is now the largest documented of its species found in Florida, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida announced Wednesday.

The female python measures nearly 18 feet long, weighs 215 pounds, and was found with 122 developing eggs in its abdomen officials said.

Biologists used “scout snakes” to find the oversized python which works by implanting radio transmitters into male snakes to help wildlife officials understand the patterns and movement of the animal.‘

Cant argue they are the devils work

Was in the Everglades last summer and they stated that 90% of the animal species in the Everglades have been eliminated in the last 20-30 years due to pythons.

They are doing everything they can to kill them.

That was Van Lierde’s sighting from a helicopter in the Belgian Congo in 1959. Snake appeared to be at least 50 ft. long, but when the photo was analyzed, it was determined to have been much longer, using nearby termite mounds as a reference - closer to 200 ft. In length.

Since so much of FL coastline is port-of-entry, there are a helluva' lot of exotics coming in and due to whatever, end up in our natural environment.

Late husband's uncle always carried a firearm on his cattle farm due to 4-legged and no-legged creatures he'd encounter. Ran into a big cobra at one of his cattle gates and missed shooting it. Everyone wore snake boots while working the ranch.
