The Earth can actually sustain even our current numbers. There's plenty of space. There's actually far more wild territory than inhabited or used by us.

The problem is just our society. We're not managing ourselves properly. There's a hugely unfair distribution of resources and disparity between rich and poor. We often abuse the land too instead of finding healthier practices.

A society has to exist in balance with the world and its own capabilities to support itself. We overshot our limit a long time ago because our capabilities suck and we have no self control, that's why its a problem, but if those improved then we could have more than 500 million easily. In an ideal world.

The reason our leaders made those stones and want 500 million is because it's easier to openly control fewer slaves than more of them. They want the world as their personal garden.
