In 1969, 16K was a lot of RAM. Computers were quick (relatively) and accurate, but the programs were necessarily small. When I was in college, I had a professor who'd had a summer contract gig with NASA. His team's task was to write a routine in machine language and make it fit in a 6K footprint (or that's how I remember the story). I don't think he explained what the routine's purpose was. They wrote the routine in whatever high-level language the computer ran, compiled it, and it was smaller than 6K. They wound up spending a lot of time at the beach.

Code has iterations -- repeating lines & sections --
which are repeatedly pasted in blocks . . .
Blocks of code would be repeated at various
forks in the code. In the old days, those blocks would have to be explicitly repeated. This took up a lot of space.
Much double & triple spacing back then too . .

Technology-smart folks can actually land on the Moon.
Other folks can detect BS.
