He's saying people have very short attention spans and just lurch from one hyped story to another.

It's a search for meaning or a common denominator. We feel alone in our experience. We feel helpkess to do anything. In reality, we dant do too much.

A shared spectacle or outrage feeds some deep need to experience eevents or emotions together.

If we applied that to our family or real world local communities, we could actually start accomplishing something or fixing things.
