They come on a string if you like that or you can cut it off. I've tried everything and they seem to block the most noise, far more than the foam ones which don't work for me. To really block out everything use both the plugs and the earphones. That's my plan for my first airline flight in 20 years. At least there will be silence if some kid starts screaming. I appreciate the advice, however I just use them when I work in my metal fabrication shop, for when I use the grinder or chop saw. I think putting an earplug in and the earmuffs would be overkill for me noise wise. I was a Makita tool guy for years, until 2 years ago I went through 5 grinders in 4 months, the motor kept burning out, my Makita grinders used to last me up to 5 years of use. I switched to a Milwaukee grinder after Makita went to shit with their made in Mexican grinders. Back in 2008 I bought a cordless Dewalt and a Makita set ... both impact wrenches have been through hell, dropped off of roofs onto concrete quite a few times. Both are still working, somehow. The best miter saw I own is my grandfather's old Makita 10" with a cast iron base... I think from the 80's.
