If we were still in the EU we would be paying for it though. Quoting: Judethz They are doing very well down there at Kourou with all the commercial launches. Never a failed launch. Scrubbed but never failed. The only failed Ariane launch I can remember was a Ariane 5 test flight. Ariane 5-1B. 1985. French President François Mitterrand had travelled to Kourou on board a Air France Concorde to attend the launch. It was a surprise visit on his way to the Pacific. Archive [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] They blamed his presence for the fail. Ship blew up on lift off and went boom! Engineers self destroyed it because of a problem with the third stage engine. They did not want the ship to crash on populated areas. The failed ship plunging at sea became known as the Ariane Submarine. I came. I saw. I Concorde. For once you have tasted Concorde you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. AC posting is once again revoked on my threads. This is why we can't have nice things. If you try to do anything to me, I will defend myself. You will not succeed. Bring it on, bitch. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80850399 So much winning. Yes, let's. Missile early warning satellites are actually vital for defense and one of the few things the federal government is supposed to be doing. The other is a lunar explorer launch paid by South Korea. SpaceX has brought the launch market back to the US and singlehandedly put the US back on top for orbital launches, where it should be. [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] You're welcome. This is exactly why I don't understand that the government never congratulate Elon Musk for the contribution towards progress. For some reason, the Biden administration don't like him. Elon deserves a medal. If not for him US have no human access to space. I reserve the right to declare my comments and posts as satire. They're going to have to get an account if they want to come back. No more ACs on this thread. I just want all the decent ACs to know why it is they can't post on my threads. Anytime I unlock AC posting I immediately receive doxxing and threats. |

Quoting: Astromut The last time two launches blasted off from the cape this close together was 1967. With the advent of automated flight termination systems, it's no longer necessary to reconfigure a bunch of ground equipment to enable ground-based tracking for sending termination signals to blow up an errant rocket if it should become necessary. The rocket itself uses GPS and its own onboard computer to activate its range safety system (self destruct system) if it detects that it's going off-course. This significantly reduces the turnaround time necessary for Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to support a launch. This made back to back launches possible for the first time in 55 years. [link to www.patrick.spaceforce.mil (secure)] I am about 125 miles SW of the Cape. The launches go up right at the end of my street. The night launches are spectacular. We also witnessed 2 different shuttle launches at the viewing area at the cape years back. Mr Samuel Colt |

The double sonic booms with shuttle reentry always told me the astronauts were probably gonna make it and land in about 10-12 minutes Mr Samuel Colt |

As a kid I got to see a number of launches from close up. My parents would go to the Polaris motel in Cocoa almost every other weekend during the summer. I spent so much time in the sun I almost changed my race...hahaha. YES. Little motel was the best view right across the water? That was the closest anyone could get back then. Good times. |
