I don't think most people "decide," they kind of get pushed along. Opportunities pop up and people either decide to take it or keep getting pushed along until the next opportunity.

You change based on what you do. That is why everyone looks a little bit different and why there are so many different 'species'. Choose what you want to change into and then do that.

Look at the various careers in each field and what is involved in actually working the jobs day to day. For example, do you want to be in a hot kitchen restaurant as a cook or chef doing the physical work of making food in a hot kitchen, standing and stirring and mixing, or sitting at a desk in air conditioning doing the mental work of programming.

I have the same problem and I decided I would just be awesome at it all... granted, it doesn't allow for much of a personal life but if you work around the clock you can get good at a few things to a professional level.
