100 Black Vultures Die in NJ from "Bird Flu"
They were found in a rural NJ county, and the DEP is just going to leave them there.

Over 100 vultures found dead after bird flu outbreak on N.J. trail, state says

[link to www.nj.com (secure)]

A section of the Sussex Branch Trail in Lafayette was closed this weekend after over 100 dead black vultures were discovered in the area, the New Jersey State Park Service announced Saturday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the birds died from avian influenza, more commonly known as bird flu, the state said.

“Black vultures are seemingly very susceptible to avian influenza, and they tend to scavenge the carcasses of dead vultures, which can prolong the duration of a local outbreak such as the one being seen in Sussex County,” the state Department of Environmental Protection said in a statement.

Agree, it makes zero sense. Plus the carcasses will likely be eaten by other vultures!

They'd shut every airport down within 500 miles and raise millions to protect the birds if they were White Vultures... but black vultures? nothing!

I thought you meant lawyers. Oh well.

NJ stopped picking up roadkill about 20 years ago to save money and the vulture population exploded. Funny thing about birds that eat dead animals, their poop stinks really bad. Then people complained about vulture poop on their BMW’s. You can’t fix stupid.

Do s search for " vultures and avian flu".

I'm seeing matching headlines, from different states,
repotting the death of 100 vultures.

Strange how that happens.

Follow-up link, environmentalists raise an alarm on leaving the dead birds "in situ"

The vultures are not small, average 5 foot wingspan.

Environmentalists Blast NJDEP Call to Let Dead Vultures Rot in the Wild

"Jeff Tittel, the former executive director of the New Jersey’s Sierra Club for over 20 years, described the NJDEP response was “shocking.”

“By leaving those birds out there to rot you can spread Avian to other birds and you are taking about a stench and pollution as they decompose—it’s just malpractice from an environmental and public health standpoint,” Tittel said. “I think it’s a symbol of everything that’s wrong with the DEP when it comes to the budget where thanks to cuts over the years you now don’t have enough qualified staff to pick up these dead birds and dispose of them properly.”"

Meet the Black Vultures of NJ
They feed almost exclusively on carrion (decomposing animals) and
find food by scanning the landscape from the air. They have also learned to spy
on their relatives, the turkey vultures, to pilfer a free meal.
