I think Putin feels losing Ukraine to a NATO army, in a sense, making Ukraine one large NATO base on it's border, is a death sentence for Russia.

Russia would be strangled to death with economic sanctions and defenseless to a NATO military.

I think Putin aims to make a last stand now and losing Ukraine is not an option.
