I think age has a lot to do with conspiracy theory (unknown phenomena).
I grew up in a age where knowledge was increasing, but wasn't influenced by the internet. Folklore was a thing, but hardly anything provable, reduced to the written word (there were fakers always...Castaneda is a prime example of a "learned" person faking knowledge based off of anthropological study)

Only those that know this time will be able to relate these feelings.

All UFO images were skeptical at best. Even today with EVERYONE possessing a high powered camera in their phone, and amazing professional equipment available..hasn't captured "high quality" footage...

Bigfoot? Besides the fact fact the dude had hollywood connections, was on Kodachrome film that was rare, wrote a book a year before the sighting.. and there are multiple discrepancies...

Alien Greys? They lived, thrived and died, with Whitley Strieber and his failed horror genre after King took over the scene...he created a media empire around "greys" and rode it for as long as he could.

New Age? Crystals? Indigo Children (that are all senior citizens now btw)...

So I have to ask the Kids today...what do YOU believe? And why is it more compelling than what we went through?

The only thing I believe in these days are unseen forces, and odd occurrences, that could be reduced to mere chance, but are highly improbable, so I believe in a higher power, but it offers no wisdom, knowledge or idea of what's beyond, out there, etc...It just happens.

Im not opposed to any of these ideas btw...I would like to think there are "aliens", other sentient beings we could interact with (terrestrial and otherworldly), perhaps dimensional in nature...

For the bible folk...it doesn't really say anything one way or the other...just everyone naturally assumes, anything not of Earth is of Demonic origin.

I was coming of age in the 90s but didn't really begin to experience the internet until the early 2000s.

Twenty years in and I can say that I've pretty much shed all of the tendencies towards magical thinking from my youth.

NOT the internet.

My cynical views of the world were shaped by my actual experiences seeing gov coverups, conspiracies, and crimes.

Examples:

Gov smuggled cocaine to fund Contras. Confirmed by my contractor buddy.

TWA 800 shot down by our own missiles. Center fuel tank, what bullshit!

Shuttle Challenger NOT brought down by O-ring. NASA error in drilling extra holes in the SRB (I was a Shuttle engineer)

But that's all reality based....

Im talking UFOs, Bigfoot, Etc...

Everything you listed I know is probably true, if unprovable, simply by doing some basic research.

Aliens? Etc...

Not a drop of anything that remotely resembles evidence. Just hearsay, and word of mouth BS.

Re: I think age has a lot to do with conspiracy theory (unknown phenomena).
Pish, I see it like this. When you are young, you are still in the learning/new wonder phase of observation and are so overwhelmed by the absorption of the world, that there is not as much time to correlate all the data.

As we get older, much of this information becomes sorted, organized and categorized in our heads. As this happens, we start to see anomalies in the data and what we currently witness. The questions that those anomalies create ultimately lead us to postulate reasons and answers. They may be wrong or right, but we still postulate them.

This then leads some to ponder scenarios that would fit the postulate with what information we currently have. However, we find ourselves many times lacking in filling all the holes in the postulate.

Some people will be so convinced that their postulate is correct, even if it is based on scant or even merely platonic data, that they will declare it true. Now belief can come into play. If they can convince others that their view is correct, then they are vindicated in their own eyes. It becomes almost a religion. The Classical "Conspiracy Theorist" is born.

Some will try unerringly to find if their postulate is true and continuously question it and demand a reasonable amount of supporting data, and if not found, reject the postulate.

There are views on this site of both ends, Belief vs Factual, and every level between.

We all have to ask the question: Is it real or just belief?
There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

If you have seen things with your own eyes then you will think differntly

I have seen numerous things - 'ghosts', and UFO's , nothing like abduction but I have stood and watched a disc in the sky which was NOTHING like our aircraft

There's an urban legend around our area too of a Nun that appears over 'The Wick', which is MOD land but the public are allowed there (unless the red flag is flying, then they are shooting). There were 3 of us and we were 16, just goofing about and then we saw this nun, I told the others to stop acting stupid as my mum was taught by nuns (Catholic), so ingrained respect. Anyway when 'she' turned around there was no face - just swirling mist where a face should be....

We ran

BUT, we all saw it

Also I had some strange experiences as a child which led to me to start reading books by Erich von Daniken, leading to some amazing long conversations with my late Dad.

The storytelling and myths of old are what makes us human and keeps us wondering, metaphysics tries to provide a rational explanation for everything - but, some things just cannot be explained

I'm 58 and grew up with a Dad, and aunt interested in UFO's, they also had seen things when they were younger

So, maybe in certain families its more likely to be a belief if members have had experiences?

Who knows, I love folklore and myths/legends - am currently waiting to start a degree with Open University, Classical Studies and can't wait.....its never too late !!!!

Not to talk down about the site, I still come here to peruse, but maybe that's all GLP ever was.

The webz was still fresh and young and people finally had the means and a place to gather to talk about all the subjects that had fascinated them over the years pre-internet that they rarely ever got to talk about irl without being labeled.

GLP was where you came to let your inner-nutter loose.

We can still see the remnants of that today from the ancient posters.

Was anything of worth accomplished?

Why yes, the site owner would say that most certainly there was.

Re: I think age has a lot to do with conspiracy theory (unknown phenomena).
I've lived in an incredibly rural area for decades now. Thousands of acres of hills, forests, caves, lakes, and streams in every direction. Most of it unoccupied.

Over the years I have seen a lot of stuff the rulers tell you don't exist.

I got totally woke up after being hunted by a Dogman, and having it almost kill me multiple times, and this was after having other cryptid encounters.

I've now had experiences with 7-8+ different humanoid species now in my life.

At this point, I've seen too much to be able to fall back asleep.

I've seen stuff people can't even believe would exist.

Folklore was a thing, but hardly anything provable, reduced to the written word (there were fakers always...Castaneda is a prime example of a "learned" person faking knowledge based off of anthropological study)

I've seen UFOs multiple times, but the best was in the middle of the day from the top of a mountain. My friend and I saw one fly directly over us. It was three white spheres flying in formation - close, like triangular to each other. Very high up and huge.

There was more to the experience than just the sighting. I won't go into it, but that was back in the mid eighties. I don't expect anyone to believe me on say so. I wouldn't have myself. You had to be there.

I saw the world a whole lot differently since that day. Not BS either, just because you haven't experienced it.

LOL This makes me laugh! 1rof1

Where did you "discover" these things?

Books.

Who wrote them?

Anyone.

Tons of UFO Lore after 40s/50s scifi ideas...

Who do you believe?

Guy that writes lots of UFO books...

Profit?

Strieber is the worst...he literally copied King's Salem's Lot (1975 ish?) years later in the 80's for his own "Lot", but the genre died soon after...

So 87 he came up with Alien Abduction Encounters at his private cabin.

That transitioned into him becoming a foremost expert on alien grays, and allowed him to have a radio talk show, and website, making him far more than writing a successful book would ever give him...

"Books" made all that happen.
