The Japanese have Aegis Atago sailing around Japan all the time. The Japanese also have PAC-3 missiles, and FPS-3, 5, and 7 warning radar.

There was no need to shoot this missile down. The radar and the missile warning computers would give a trajectory and a threat fan or ellipse. They could easily see it was a miss by miles.
