Kids need to take the 'Privilege Walk'

Yep, it is much cheaper for us to send our kids' lunch than to pay every day for it.

Yeah the schools (cafeteria run by Sodexo) charge 3.75 for an eighth of a slice of pizza, a spoonful of peas and a carton of milk (water is extra). They don't even give them a cookie or fruit cocktail or pudding or anything fun ... that's also extra.

Last year, for some reason, everyone got a free lunch and the kids all still packed bc the lunches suck so bad. I had to beg my kids to just eat the damn free lunch some days when I was out of this or that by morning.

It's 90 cents worth of "food", if that.

In our state (NJ), it's free to households with incomes less than 70k, and 3.75 for everyone else.

Uhm, as a white child I couldn’t take more than 2 steps in this exercise. White privilege is largely a myth because its conflated with wealth. The two can be mutually exclusive. And I can assure you, bringing your lunch to school was NEVER a privilege. My food sucked. I wanted school food.

So "Privilege" is basically having responsible parents who love their children and who provide enough value to others that they can afford a middle class lifestyles?
Lacking "privledge" is having irresponsible parents who are possibly criminals, and who - probably though their own actions - lack the morals, skills, talents and ability to make good decisions and provide value to others and therefore don't have money but still tach thier kid that they are entitled to things they didn't earn?

Doesn't that make it the parent fault?
Then why would you be trying to make so-called "privileged" kids feel guilty about having good parents?

Take a look at the people in front of you. Their parents are working towards the American dream, you can get there if you work hard and have goals. You all have opportunities to get there, it takes hard work, but you can have this as well. This is America people; we have rights and opportunities This is what should be the message.

When my son was in high school, I NEVER ran out of stuff to pack because there was so little food in the lunches he'd buy 3 and come home with a 11.25 debit slip lol

I sent him to school with a 12-pack cooler full of stuff!

Children with functional families are "priviledged"

Where I live is both noticeably racially diverse and affluent.

The only actual "white privilege" I can see operating around me is that white criminals tend to get shot in the back or killed while handcuffed by police officers at a lower rate than black criminals. And that's not even "around me", but it is like that in other close by towns.

But every single one of these kids in my community is definitely privileged!!! Compared to how I grew up on the other side of the tracks in the 70s and 80s ... these kids will never know the various stressors that POOR kids have.

They are privileged to have parents who worked their asses off to live in a decent area and send them to schools where they have a chance of making something of themselves. They are definitely privileged in that way.

Some of this is just good parenting, doesn't take money, if they choose to parent and put some effort into it they too can be privileged.

As far as the other things and material things, so what, we aren't all equal, never will be, that in and of itself doesn't classify anyone as privileged. We have a division of labor in our society, of course some will be more "privileged" than others, it's baked into the cake.

So now parents that worked hard to get through school, work hard on their job(s), work OT to provide their children with extras, and successfully provide the basics (yeah, like a lunch, house, you know BASICS) for their children will have their kids labeled & demeaned as privileged, as if that's a crime.

Worse yet, normal average kids from normal average families being made to feel badly and demeaned by the school, kids of the "not so privileged parents" that may be here illegally, or on welfare, or addicts, or those that have parents that chose not to go to school, or finish school, or work at all!

So somehow, the privileged families, that are privileged, primarily due to hard work and merit are supposed to pick up the slack for those not as successful?
