After a nuclear disaster like the one in Fukushima, Japan, in 2011, first responders need to quickly measure radiation exposure en masse and decide who requires urgent treatment.
Existing tests are fast and accurate—but they rely on sophisticated laboratories, expensive machinery and meticulous work, says Dipanjan Chowdhury, a radiation oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “We don't have copious amounts of radiation drugs available” in such a situation, he adds. “So how do we decide who gets them?”

To address this question, Chowdhury and his colleagues are developing a simple assay that responders could deploy in the field with limited expertise or equipment. The test, described in March in Science Translational Medicine, detects levels of molecules called microRNAs (miRNAs) in blood and other bodily fluids.

The signature appears within 24 hours of exposure and can be measured using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a common technique. “Based on the ingredients and the complexity, the miRNA test should be significantly cheaper than any existing test,” Chowdhury says.

Because it's utter nonsense. We get a new "discovery" here every other day, with serious looking people on some Zoom call, proving that "this happened" and "that happened". Just last week it was nanomachines in the vax, this week it's fucking radiation. Possibly, but the main reason they were kept in cold storage is to preserve them. It took years to make and stockpile Billions of doses. They were being made and stockpiled long before 2019.

I think Chernobyl was real…not that it’s a great source, but HBO ran the documentary on it last year and it seemed way to gnarly to be a hoax….why do such a great job on that but so shitty on everything else. They had no failsafe containment on their reactors. The footage of ailing and dying cleanup workers/soldiers suffering from radiation sickness was beyond Hollywood nor could I think of anything else it could have been attributable to. Not to mention The footage of Chernobyl before and after….they really built that community to be an idyllic shining star of what communism could produce, quite the production just for programming. Unfortunately what they were trying to achieve may even be possible, but hubris may have caused them to jump the gun. No then, as anything nefarious at the core cause of the tragedy, who is to say, but seemed real to me.
