And according to Powell, the process of launching a digital currency will take at least another couple of years, during which the Fed will be “doing work, building public confidence in our analysis, in our ultimate conclusions, which we certainly haven’t reached yet”.

Included in that work will be bringing the FedNow instant-payment system online, currently scheduled for between May and July 2023.

Some even believe that this system, which enables all financial institutions across the US to provide safe and efficient instant-payment services in real-time around the clock, every day of the year, is a preferable long-term option to a CBDC.

“FedNow will help transform the way payments are made through new services that allow consumers and businesses to make payments conveniently, in real time, on any day, and with immediate availability of funds for receivers,” Michelle Bowman, a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors, said in August.

“Our assessment of these benefits has not changed even as we consider whether a central bank digital currency (CBDC) might fit into the future U.S. money and payments landscape.”

Yes through banks to begin with... but even so, all FedNow transactions will instantly process through the federal reserve servers, making it a CENTRAL BANK DIGITAL CURRENCY.

They are all also marketing FedNow to employers for Payroll... and to insurance companies to instantly payout claims etc.

No there not.. if i pay someone online who uses a different bank.. it can take hours or even a day or two to reach them if it is a weekend for example.

FedNow would be instant 24/7 as the Federal Reserve would process it immediately.

So it seems basically the Fed is going to keep the US dollar as it is... and probably phase out cash...

...but instead of banks paying each other directly at the end of each business day... which is how transfers currently occur...

...now payments between banks on behalf of individuals and retail shops etc, will be made instantly through the Federal reserve Master Bank account... giving them (the fed) the power to block or restrict (think programmable currency) any transactions deemed undesirable (ie, you are not allowed to pay the butcher as you have consumed enough meat this week)...

So essentially a CBDC... but they will probably market it as being an alternative to a CBDC.
