It could be recalled products. They don't actually ship recalled product back to the manufacturer. They just throw it out.

Before you eat check for RECALLS first. That might be the reason for it.

Many years ago we used to ride BMX in a forest preserve that was located near a Frito Lay plant. One of the local riders showed us the dumpsters in front of the plant and the huge assortment of goodies in there.

The stuff would be nearing expiration, but usually had a couple weeks left on it. There was tons of frito lay stuff in there like funyons, grandma's cookies, slim jims...and any other kind of FL chips you could think of. The key was to find the bags that had the most amount of air left in them and it was just as good as store bought stuff.

It was a pretty valuable resource as a broke teen aged kid.

I read a while back that half of all food is wasted.

While I worked on the BNSF we were called to derailments to repair the infrastructure.
Train loads of grain were hauled to the dump and not distributed to needy farmers because insurance would not pay out unless the product is destroyed in a landfill.
The same is true for ANY commodity in a collision even if undamaged.

The OP, in the eyes of the insurer and the Law was committing a theft.

I know of this one guy who makes harvesting dumpsters his "profession". He does it for the environment, you know.

He'll scab onto anything, but he especially fancies skanky food. He'll go out on his nocturnal "shopping trips" and return with a carload of marginal (at best) random grocery items. He sorts through it and saves the worst for his personal consumption. The rest he tries to sell.

The boy refuses to purchase anything. "Miser" and "miserable" come from the same Latin roots.

And it's all "for the environment".
