Tracking ISS with its new solar arrays before CRS-26 departed yesterday!

SpaceX CRS-26 has splashed down this morning and valuable science experiments are being recovered from the capsule, including one I'm involved with which has just departed the recovery ship on a helicopter as I type this. Yesterday morning I used my 11" Celestron NexStar GPS and SatTraker to track ISS hours before CRS-26 departed. You can see the new iROSA arrays brought up by CRS-26 as well as the stricken Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft!

Roscosmos also confirmed this morning that the damaged Soyuz MS-22, which suffered a coolant leak possibly due to a micro-meteoroid/orbital debris strike last month, will return to earth empty. The next Soyuz, MS-23, will be launched empty in an automatic mode for the current MS-22 crew members (Sergei Prokopiev, Dmitry Petelin and Frank Rubio) to use as their return vehicle.

Russia is officially concluding that it was micro-meteoroid/orbital debris damage that caused the Soyuz MS-22 coolant leak.

For all those who wonder why ISS is never hit. Well, sometimes it is.

You mean people in general? I only said former Thunderbird pilots. People? Well, I've shown that people have indeed flown to ISS...

The NexStar definitely tracks smoother than the old LX200 does. The NexStar allows me to directly set the drive rates rather than having to do a hacky control loop to force the PID loop of the LX200 to do what I need it to do. I also stabilize it in post, and I've started to use a similar script I wrote to do real-time stabilization so that I can better tell what the focus is doing so that I can compensate for mirror flop as it tracks ISS through the sky. It still requires that I lean over to look at the laptop monitor as I turn the focus knob, so my next task is to motorize the focuser so that I don't have to get up from my desk while tracking. Most motorized focusers are expensive and my scope's optical tube is too old to use the cheap Celestron focus motor (found that out the hard way, thank God for Amazon's generous return policy). Right now my plan is to craft up a motor housing in Blender and send it to my friend for 3d printing, wire it up to an Arduino and program a key binding for it on my joystick for when I'm doing launch tracking.

It’s a joke Astro. Thunderbirds are go!

The space station was Thunderbird 5. This is the kind of shit we used to watch before Star Blazers came out.

(That’s a joke Astro!) tounge (admittedly not a very good one)

Really good job. Do you have any plans to find les turbulent air? Maybe a trip to Arizona or something?

Also, are you planning a trip to see the total eclipse next year?

Any info on a uptick of space garbage falling back to earth in the recent months or is it normal as I know in my neck of the woods we have noticed a lot of things in the sky.

Maybe I'm just noticing more because I'm looking but any official stats or places you can see what and when things have fallen back to earth?
