Germany needs fuel to survive as an economic powerhouse.

IF they are cut off from cheap Russian natural gas, then they must be allowed to mine their coal. Germany knows how to use coal cleanly. (Mostly by coal gasification, followed by either a Purisol or Rectisol cleaning and a Claus sulfur removal unit). They are the world's expert in this without question, and the can run with pretty much zero emissions. (Other than CO2 and water of course, and a vitreous slag that encapsulates the slag).

Buying LNG from the US is probably too expensive. Must cost at least 4 times as much as cheap pipeline natural gas from Russia.
