I am thinking that this might have been the last open escape road from Bakhmut or one of the other cities near it.

Before the terminators, they would put some dug in spotters in place to call in the artillery onto a road being used to bring supplies to, or escape from what they term a "cauldron".

I am guessing these guys in the trench were the spotters.
But to have some armor roll up the road and lay waste to the retreating Ukrainian horde works also.
