I'd feed the seeds and corn to the wild ducks and geese that overwintered on the lake behind my house. The last winter I was there, I noticed that everything was eaten except the corn. I used to pour the feed in a circle so that the birds could stand around the edge of the circle instead of all ganging up on one pile. Come summer, the grass under the circle where I'd poured the corn was dead. The corn was still there and the grass was dead, brown and dead. It didn't grow back. I never bought commercial-grade corn again |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 85167100 United States 01/28/2023 11:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I really wish I could raise some chicken. I live out in the countryside, in a large forest. But the forest is filled with coyotes. Lots of them. You should hear some of my audio recordings. I do feed a lot of cats here too. They were once feral but love and trust me now. They've wandered out of the forest into my yard looking for food and safety. Got 14 right now. They hang out on my balcony out back. When they hear coyotes nearby, they'll run and hide in their (heated in the winter) habitat box I made for them or head for under my car nearby. Raising chickens is no fun if you keep them penned into a small space. The fun is allowing them to free range, to follow you around, and to interact with you. I've spend a few summers in my RV camping at my son's home on 20 acres about an hour from where I live. He has chickens. And I enjoyed getting to know them when I camped there. They found comfort and safety by hanging out nearby and under my RV during the summers I was there. None ever got eaten while I was there. Now I have my own home out in the countryside so I don't go camping there anymore. I didn't realize there were so many coyotes here until I moved here. It's insane here. There's way to many. Sometimes the entire forest will fill with their howls. My audio recording have actually scared people that have heard them. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds .. maybe many thousands of them surround me here. I feel sad at times knowing I really shouldn't raise any here unless I spent a lot of money on a tall fence around about an acre with barb wire along the top. And that's still not free ranging. I frequently see coyotes running across my property at night. Chickens would be in their coop at night though. That I could make secure. Chickens generally head home when the sun starts dropping low. And the coyotes aren't usually seen until dusk. I've considered maybe trying it one summer. But then I've got cats all over here to think about too. I'm sure I could train them to stay away from the chickens. But there are other feral cats in the forest too. But they don't fuck around with the wild turkeys around here. That's probably because they could peck their eyes out pretty quickly. They do follow turkeys around in the yard, but seemingly only out of curiosity. I do miss those chickens at my son's home. It was fun teaching them tricks. It was fun watching them come charging to me when they would see me with a red cup ... that meant rolled oats treat time. They would sit on the steps at my RV door waiting for me to come out to engage in play with them. I would sit in a lawn chair out there and they would form a circle around me and hang out too. It was fun looking for their eggs. A few didn't like missing eggs in the coop every day. So some would start laying them under foliage around the property. They would leave one chicken out there every night to sit on them until morning. Then a relief chicken would go and relieve that one in the morning so it could go eat and forage for bugs and vegetation. I would watch this happen to learn where their hiding place was. Then I would call them all to come get some oats. While they all ate I would snatch half of these hidden eggs and mark the rest to know what to snatch later or tomorrow. I've caught raccoons in their coop too. But they were not after the chickens. They wanted at their feed and eggs. I can legally shoot coyotes here on my property any time and without a license. But, I don't want to have to do that. The only thing I would shoot is a hunter's dog chasing a deer across my property. That's legal to do here and in the state forest that surrounds me. It's illegal for hunting dogs to chase down deer here. Hunting dogs can not hunt wildlife themselves. Of course, if I raised chickens here, I wouldn't know what to do with all the eggs. I don't really eat a lot of eggs. I just want some for the fun of having them around. And I would want to lose any to coyotes. I do eat a lot of chicken, but I don't want to have to fuss with harvesting them. But, they would be the best tasting chickens. And I could feed parts of them to my cats. To do that I'd want to raise at least 50 every year to harvest. And those I would keep restricted to a fenced in area. And I'd want a rooster too. But, it's just easier to buy chicken. I already buy that cheap crappy Walmart chicken to feed my cats a treat a few times a week during the winter. I buy myself the better organic chicken at Costco. Sigh ... (lol) |
