Emory was an IM. I don't know if there has ever been a black GM (we don't do affirmative action in chess). Emory was a very nice guy and a perfect gentleman. I'm a White female and I even roomed with Emery for chess tournaments in the eighties and he was always very respectful and never tried to put the make on me. Not many women play chess and I sometimes roomed with male players. They knew I had a bf and wasn't looking - they respect that in chess ("We are one family" is the FIDE motto). Emory was engaged to a British woman. At that time, Emory was an extremely handsome man who was always nice and respectful. He obviously had a lot of Caucasian admixture. Emory spoke fluent Russian with the Russian players, and he lived in VA, so I assumed he was in military intelligence. I'm a sensitive and an empath. Emory was one of the good guys.
