There is a new kind of mystery object in space, and after capturing their best image yet, astronomers are one step closer to understanding these celestial oddballs.

They are known as odd radio circles, or ORCs. While the thought of ORCs may bring the goblinlike humanoids from the “Lord of the Rings” books to mind, these fascinating objects have baffled scientists since they first discovered them in 2020.

Astronomers found the odd radio circles using the Australian SKA Pathfinder telescope, operated by Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, or Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, two years ago.

These space rings are so massive that they measure about a million light-years across – 16 times bigger than our Milky Way galaxy.

Astronomers believe it takes the circles 1 billion years to reach their maximum size, and they are so large that the objects have expanded past other galaxies.

This image shows a new view of the Milky Way from the Murchison Widefield Array, with the lowest frequencies in red, middle frequencies in green, and the highest frequencies in blue. The star icon shows the position of the mysterious repeating transient.

Now, a new image captured by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory’s MeerKAT telescope provides more detail and information. (MeerKat is shorthand for Karoo Array Telescope, preceded by the Afrikaans word for “more.”) The image and findings were published Monday in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The image in question shows a galaxy that often hosts supernovae at three separate times, all in one picture. Gravitational lensing, which results in the time-defying feat, happens when a large galaxy cluster, in this instance, a cluster called RX J2129 that is roughly 3.2 billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Aquarius, physically warps the fabric of space and time.

Depending on the route that the background galaxy’s light went through or around the lensed object, the effect provides us with three alternative perspectives of the galaxy. We can still make out the supernova in the earliest perspective, when the light traveled the farthest. I would not be surprised if the Universe is a vortex. There are many more examples if we choose to look.
