While there is still time!! The best survival vehicle I ever owned was a 1971 VW Westfelia camper bus. I drove that thing all over the US, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. It was small enough to get into tight places, and durable as hell. I lived in it for months at a time, and it had a queen size bed. I also traveled with a couple of girlfriends. I also made it as light as possible, and put a 1974 transmission in it, for better top speeds to keep up with the traffic. The only alteration on the transmission was a shorter spindle on the connecting shaft. It got about 19 MPG on the highway. I should have kept it, but I got tired of doing the 3,000 mile maintenance of adjusting the valves, and changing the oil. Those little helicopter motors get really hot, and burn the oil, turning it black, and ruining the viscosity. When I change the oil in my Outback, it looks brand new, with no loss of viscosity. |
