While restricted to non-Muslim diplomats, the store in Riyadh comes as Saudi Arabia’s assertive Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aims to make the kingdom a tourism and business destination as part of ambitious plans to slowly wean its economy away from crude oil. [link to apnews.com (secure)] Saudi was awarded the soccer World Cup in 2034 a few months ago, so they will need to have some sort of quasi-normalization of alcohol consumption by the beginning of the next decade. You can't have a World Cup without booze. They had booze in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, but the boozing wasn't at the same level as it normally is, ie. AN EPIC PISS-FEST! |
