Let me guess: whooping cough was one of those really really bad diseases with a high mortality rate in 1900, which then became a minor inconvenience that almost never had serious impact in 1950, and then in 1970 they rolled out the vaccine and pretended that the field of medicine was so great.

My brother caught it from taking an overnight train in Eastern Europe. He didn't know he had it until a routine pre-ttavel screening about a year later. He had to take antibiotics for six months.
