The right question about Key bridge, can we even rebuild it . The 70’s was a different time . | |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 86065174 However, this time be sure to add protective fenders/dolphins. The Dolphins are made out of concrete. Other bridges have them. The Concrete Dolphins are sacrificed in order to protect the bridge from a wayward ship. This was all easily preventable. Seek the truth. Put on your Engineers hat. Yep. But not sure about a ship that size and displacement. Emotion beats reason Don't let it be that way |

It was a questionable decision to take down the old one and spend all that money, but it was mostly federally funded so what the hell ... New bridge is bigger and probably better, but they still didn't put rail across it. FSK bridge should be relatively easy to rebuild. Piers/pylons are still in place. Even the deep part of the one that was hit may be still OK. Just build upward, then install the spans etc. Over half the work is still reusable. If we can't get this done we aren't even trying. Besides Biden said the FedGov would rebuild it, and they CAN do it. After Biden knocked down the Forbes Ave. bridge in Pittsburgh he had it rebuilt in less than a year, better than before. Going across it you don't even realize now that anything changed. They can't re-use the pylons due to the possibility they were damaged in the collision. They will never rebuild the bridge due to a lack of competence. They will clear the port in no time flat though. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 86964648 United States 03/28/2024 01:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If it gets rebuilt, the new one is very likely to be much smaller... maybe a drawbridge... This section of 695 does not carry nearly the amount of traffic that it used to when the bridge was built. The manufacturing that drove the traffic on this section of the beltway no longer exists. |

Hell it a major shipping channel besides a major highway around Baltimore. Those diamond shaped piers have a proven history of success. No more tinker toy structures, sure there pretty but the linkages all depend on one another. Fear God and Dread Nought. |

And we can build it back better... just need to pass a large maybe 3 trillion dollar infrastructure spending package though congress and get the money flowing. Create some "shovel ready jobs". I imagine it'll help fight inflation in the process. Thankfully we have Biden in office to handle all this. |

Oh and the Chinese are absolutely known for sure to have the capability to hack and remote control ship critical systems. I'm not saying it was the Chicoms who did it btw... I am saying that somebody appears to want us to think it is though. As far as rebuilding the bridge goes, yes we absolutely can and fairly easily but the real question is will we? That's a much better question. roguetechie |

Baltimore has been one of the worst performing cities education-wise for many years now, many schools there should have flunked their supposed high school grads. If you think that's bad... look up the history of I-40 & I-70 connector project that was supposed to bring I-70 directly into downtown Baltimore that was partially built, then scrapped and left abandoned for decades before being torn down. Never opened to the public. The bomb scenes from the movie Independence Day used the unfinished highway overpasses outside Baltimore before they were torn down. 195 has never been finished and the 695 expansion on the east side was never finished to this day. I doubt much happens with this thing. They'll clear the creek out so the ships can get through and then the MD/DC bureaucracy will dicker over how best to line their buddies' pockets for the next 20 years. |
