Abusive father to represent himself in rights-termination trial

By Ruth Liao • Statesman Journal • February 4, 2010

The trial proceedings that will determine the placement of children taken from a Turner-area couple convicted of child abuse resumed Wednesday amid more unusual behavior.

Graydon Drown, 51, abruptly dismissed attorney Jeff Carter, who was asked by the court to assist Drown.

Graydon Drown and Robyn Kay Drown, 43, are serving prison time for their convictions. Graydon Drown is serving 29 years; Robyn Drown is serving 20 years.

The criminal court trial took place in late 2008. The Drowns were arrested in June 2008 and nine children were taken from the home after two teen sons disclosed the abuse to leaders of the local Jewish community. The family attended Temple Beth Sholom in South Salem.

The trial that resumed Wednesday was set to terminate the parental rights of the Drowns for six of their children.

Graydon Drown chose to represent himself. Robyn Drown is represented by attorney Dora Lutz.

Assistant attorney general Kristen Farnworth is representing Oregon Department of Human Services, which is asking the court that the six younger children — who range in age from 6 months to 12 years — be adopted.

The trial is expected to continue through next week. The first part of the trial took place in early January and was set to resume this month in order to allow time for Graydon Drown to prepare his defense.

Most termination proceedings settle before trial.

In 2009, the Department of Justice represented DHS in 81 termination of parental rights trials, winning 74 cases and losing seven cases, spokesman Tony Green said.
