SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

HELIOS MAXIMUS BAFFLED!-

Just a bit perplexed about the lack of flares despite high SS# counts. Of course the X-ray background has been above C1 for about a week now. I've never seen a B-G-D region in a large sunspot not agitate for a strong flare/eruption at some point. Like the Cold War, we see an underlying tension yet little happens......

....Until one day BOOM!!, a nuclear war breaks out.

Back to work tomorrow.....Keep a close eye on 3017.

DOC WATSON!!! HURRAY!!!

I played/sang in a band back in the 90's that "opened"
for Doc Watson at a summer concert in N.Carolina.

It was my "one moment of FAME" and I was so nervous on stage...
I almost passed out. But we did a great job and it is one
of my fondest memories. Sang "Amazing Grace" with guitar/fiddle among others.
(We were an Old Time Fiddle Band back then! Great fun
but no money! lol!)

SUN-GRAZING COMET HIT THE SUN 3 DAYS AGO (5-21-2022)

A Kreutz-family sungrazing comet's final moments were captured by the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

The Sungrazing Comet Crashed Into the Sun on May 19-20, 2022.

On May 24, 2022, a long filament of solar material that had been hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, erupted out into space at 3:39 a.m. EDT (07:39 UTC). The eruption produced a coronal mass ejection (CME). Coronagraph images from SOHO, show the plasma cloud is directed to the south of the sun and away from our planet.

From within the orbit of planet Mercury, the Solar Orbiter returned imagery during its first close encounter (perihelion) with the Sun. In close-up, the south pole of the Sun.

Another Day, Another New Sunspot!

The C5 came from a new region in the SE. I think this makes 10 sunspot regions now. Extraordinary considering how early it is in Cycle 25.

Wow, great! I have a newfound respect for you, O.C., my musical friend.

Bob Dylan once tipped me $50 as I played harmonica on a streetcorner in Philly. I was actually performing an old Dylan tune, but I wasn't nervous about it. I didn't know it was him until later that afternoon, haha. Of course Doc is a legend of the Americana musical tradition.

Well...I can always use an extra $50!



But I'd pass on the $50 and add about $1,000 more to
personally meet and jam with Bob Dillon...Holy crap!
Dillon was my first "rebel" musician mentor back in the
day. He was (and is) an amazing mind/vibration. I prolly
wouldn't be in the Pacific NW without the old DillonMan!
My only "close-call" with a famous harmonica player was
"old Joe" in Oregon. He loved jazz harmonica and made a
good name for himself in the grassroots circuits of Oregon.
Wish I had a recording of some of his stuff.

The coronagraph images (when they come in) will give us a clue to how much of the CME is headed our way. It's been awhile since we had a CME impact.

We had a 'tenflare', a Type II Radio Emission and a Type IV Radio Emission with the M1.3 flare.

Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity reached moderate levels due a M1.3/1n parallel ribbon
flare associated with an approximately 6 degree long filament eruption
from the vicinity of spotless Region 3016 (S18W47). Radio activity was
also detected in association with this flare, to include a Type II sweep
at 25/1817 UTC with estimated velocity of 994 km/s, a Type IV sweep at
25/1824 UTC, and a 10.7cm Tenflare burst of 160 sfu at 25/1816 UTC. GOES
SUVI imagery indicated a likely CME as an EUV wave, coronal dimming, and
a post-flare loop arcade were observed. The associated CME was first
clearly confirmed at 25/1848 UTC with a pronounced signature departing
to the southwest. Although the bulk of the ejecta had a southwest
vector, we await additional coronagraph imagery to properly conduct
analyses.

Seven sunspot groups were present on the visible solar disk. Region 3014
(N22W74, Dkc/beta-delta) continued slow decay and was inactive as it
rotated closer to the west limb. Region 3017 (N12W57, Dso/beta)
underwent only minor changes and was primarily stable. All remaining
regions underwent only minor changes or decay.

.Forecast...
Low solar activity, with a chance for M-class flares (R1-R2;
Minor-Moderate radio blackouts) and slight chance for X-class flares
(R3; Strong) is expected 26 May. Low solar activity is expected on 27
May, with a slight chance for M-class flares; and low solar activity is
likely on 28 May with a slight chance of M-class flares. This downward
trend is primarily due to Regions 3014 and 3017 rotating to or beyond
the limb.
