"According to TEPCO, radioactive iodine-131 amounting to 220 becquerels per cubic centimeter, cesium-134 at 88 becquerels and cesium-137 at 93 becquerels PCC were detected in the pool water. Those substances are generated by nuclear fission indicating that a nuclear meltdown had or was taking place. TEPCO stated that radioactive materials were up to 100,000 times higher than normal."

"Sure, iodine is more volatile than cesium, so, when you have an almost total fuel melt (in a "classic" release to atmosphere accident), 100% of the iodines can be released while maybe at most 35% of the cesium is released outside containment because the iodine can come out as vapor, while the cesium comes out as aerosol subject to agglomeration and also chemical binding with the concrete basemat."

[link to www.glgroup.com]

Since Iodine 131 is much more volatile, than cesium, it makes one wonder what the real I 131 levels are if the report is correct.

The cesium will be around a while, bioaccumulating with a half-life of around 2 years vs cesium 137 with a half life of around 30 years.

Re: "Highest Yet: Cesium-134 in Northern California topsoil at 250% level of previous test"
Drinking water was a concern of mine. What I did was buy four 58-gallon rain barrels. I put them in the basement and filled them up with water BEFORE the crap got here. Still working on the first barrel. As each empties, I'll go to the next, and refill the one last used. That way, by the time I get to a barrel, it will have aged a good while, and at least the radioactive Xenon and Iodine will by then be more or less gone (down to a millionth or less of the radioactivity compared to when I filled the barrel).

Also, the taps to the barrels are about eight inches from the bottom. If you want to drain the entire barrel, that's a downside. But for the purpose of protecting myself from radioactive heavy metals, they will (I hope) float to the bottom, and I won't end up drinking them. (Of course, over time the barrels themselves will become dangerous that way, but not much I can do about that.)

"The government on Saturday said that levels of radioactivity in seawater near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant had risen significantly in recent days, according to samples taken Friday."

"Hidehiko Nishiyama of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the level of radioactive iodine-131 spiked to 6,500 times the legal limit, up from 1,100 times over the limit the day before. Levels of cesium-134 and cesium-137 rose nearly fourfold."

[link to search.japantimes.co.jp]

So in Japan, if the I 131 levels rose 6,500 times, and cesium 134 and 137 rose fourfold, what are the real I 131 levels in the US (California).

I just feel like we are all being lied to, and I am getting really angry about it. huffy

"The department reported last week it found 18 picocuries per liter of iodine-131 in Big Island milk, significantly below the 4,700 picocuries per liter at which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would take steps to safeguard the public, such as removing milk from store shelves. Rainwater tested in Hawaii had two picocuries per liter.
Radiation carried through the air and clouds will likely decline as time passes, said Jeff Eckerd, the state Department of Health's acting program manager for indoor and radiological health."

[link to www.greenfieldreporter.com]

"Nonetheless, the EPA does not consider the milk dangerous because the MCL is set for long-term exposure, and the iodine-131 from Japan’s Fukushima-Daichi nuclear accident is expected to be temporary and deteriorate rapidly.""The EPA’s MCL for iodine-131 is 3 picoCuries per liter.

[link to www.infiniteunknown.net]

According to the EPA, the Hawaii milk is 6 times the limit, and yet the FDA tries to give the impression that it is perfectly safe for little children because all of this is "extremely temporary", even though Japan says that it may take 30 years to get these reactors under control.

"Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has admitted that there will be a long-term battle to stabilize Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant."

[link to www.sify.com]

"Damaged reactors at the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant may take three decades to decommission and cost operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. more than 1 trillion yen ($12 billion), engineers and analysts said."

not to rain on your doom parade, but the topsoil reading from 4/13 is basically the same as the 4/6 reading (2 readings ago).

I-131 levels in top soil have dropped per the 4/13 vs. 4/6 tests by 327% and CS-137 has dropped since the 4/6 test.

Grass levels for all isotopes have dropped steadily over the past few weeks, CS-134 dropped by 500% and CS-137 dropped by 560% since 4/3 tests. I-131 has dropped 960% since 4/3.

Spinach is the only thing that raises any concern at all since it is trending up for all isotopes.

Looking closer at the spinach trends and it looks like the last test was on spinach that was purchased on 4/7, so it will be interesting to see if that goes down when it's tested again. Could be an important metric.

Thanks, although most of that is reported for 4-7 or earlier with the exception of one report on 4-13 (for topsoil). As it is now 4-21 and there seems to have been some changes in reactor status, in the last week, I would like to see more current information if possible before saying that the news blip is incorrect or fear mongering.

The most recent data I could find was from 4-16, which is not exactly current either.

Also since the half-life of cesium 134 is around 2 years, and the half-life of cesium 137 is around 30 years, these are not just important as day-to-day measurements. This is bioaccumulative, and we are going to continue to accumulate as this situation continues.

This is what I believe state and federal agencies are failing to address.

It depends how long the situation is ongoing.

If the reactors cannot be controlled for YEARS, then yes we will have continuing accumulation of long lasting isotopes in ocean currents and atmospheric currents.

I just think that its time to stop burying our heads in the sand, and bury those reactors instead in boron.
