Parents: Grown Adult kids moving back home!!!!!!

Maureen Shackelford slips into old habits sometimes. The Annapolis mother of three grabs dirty laundry from one of her children’s rooms on her way downstairs, or picks up clothes in her son’s bedroom and puts them away. She has to stop and remind herself: Kyle is 23, Erin is 22 and Colin is 19. They are adults.

But they are living at home.

Finding the line between supporting and enabling your recent graduate is a typical experience in the life of a family with “boomerang” children who move back home after college.

With the economy lagging the past few years, 39 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 say they have had to move in with their parents in recent years, according to a 2011 studyby the Pew Research Center. A Pew analysis of Census Bureau data showed that more adults are living in multi-generational households than at any time since the 1950s.

It’s really common for parents to help their kids in their 20s,” said Liz Weston, a personal finance columnist. “If what you’re doing is helping to launch your kid into living independently, it’s a good thing. But if what you’re doing is enabling your kid to remain a teenager, that’s not a good thing.”

The Shackelfords are taking in Kyle and Erin, both of whom graduated from college in May, while they save money and continue their education. Youngest son Colin is also home for the summer after his freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

“Having five grown adult independent-thinking people in the house is not easy,” Maureen said. “They all have their own ideas about everything now; they’re not just compliant miniature versions of you anymore.”

The hispanic community usually has like 3 or 4 generations under the same roof. It is next to impossible for the twenty somethings to afford independent living, shoot their parents can barely afford the rising cost of everything.

Good thing we will have free healthcare thanks to Obama.

My grandma lived with my aunty all the way into her 90s, so its not unheard of to have family living together even here in blighty. Personally I don't see what the problem is especially if you do the chores and pay for your own things.

Afterall its just like living in a bedsit/flat-share situation only its your family. Financially it makes sense aswell.

You got it... This will affect the white Baby Boomers the hardest as they thought their kids were out and done... Only to return home in their 40's and 50's!

Lucky that these 40-50 year olds still have parents who are still alive. I'm in my early 30s and I know I won't have that.

One of my neighbors (who's retired) needed to cash in all of his retirement to afford an addition to his house so that 2 of his 3 adults (and their families) could move back home!

My dad moved back to his mother's house when he was 47. He divorced my mom and had nowhere to go.

I asked him how much he spent on the addition, he said 400K!!!! Its safe to say he has sunk a cool million into each of his kids...

My sister in her 30's who is legally blind is living with parents and I had to move back in with parents because no job can give full time and provide benefits. everyone is wanting to hire part time employees with no benefits to make it cheap for the business.

renting is like throwing money into the wind when you can just save for a few years and buy land and a home.

it sucks but the way I see it, things will work out in the end.

It's a sad state of affairs when parents in their 80's and 90's have to take in their grown children!!!

In Greece (where half of my family is from), you don't leave home until you get married. I remember talking to my cousin who was about 30 years old, a record producer for the largest TV and music label there (Antenna) and he still lived at home. I was about 22 and thought it was really weird but he had a 100,000+ euro income so it's not like he was lazy or anything. In fact, he paid for all of the bills at his moms house. I'd ask him why he doesn't move out, "why would I want to move out? I love my mother!", well, what about when you want to spend time with a girl? "I go get a hotel".

It's really old world values that keeps the family tighter in my opinion. My mother was devastated when I left the house at 18 but I felt like that was what I was supposed to do. Then I moved to another city and year after year passed and I kept saying "I'll come for Christmas next year". Then before I knew it, she was gone at 58 years old. Totally unexpected.

Enjoy your family while you have them. The kids don't have to leave at 18, it's a bankers scam. An 18 year old can't make a decent wage with no experience, so they move out, get a bunch of credit cards so make ends meet then become debt slaves for the rest of their lives.

Now on the flip side, a 30+ year old shouldn't live at home with no job and just bumming around because then they just end up becoming internet trolls.

I only have one that has moved out and he can't come back home...he got a tattoo and that's against the rules of my house.

These kids that think they're so fucking smart spend four or more years in college partying their asses off and getting that big Liberal Arts degree in Humanities, or women's multicultural studies, or ART HISTORY.

Then, they get the big shock! OMG, those greedy corporations won't pay me the $100K per year that they owe me.

So, they move back in to their old bedroom and spend their days on GLP telling everyone else how fucking stupid they are and how capitalism has failed.
