( joking) I think you should just do backpacking to every place , and see where you would like to settle ! Each place has different kind of energy so it's not easy to 'classify' where is the best for you! Just about last month I had the same thought so I was thinking about going back to my grandparents' country home where I used to enjoy my childhood... but I am not very sure now as many things came up recently! |

Hey Amy :) I'd like to go backpacking around, but I don't know if I could support that and still have enough at the end to find a place. I'd have to stay here longer and save up more. Would be nice though. And I'd totally consider Korea lol! Why not? I bet there's beautiful places to check out. Right now, I'm not discounting anywhere! :) About you reconsidering doing the same kind of thing, I hope it's not because your life got complicated in a bad way. I hope you can still go back to the country. Just from what I've read from you before, you seem like someone who would be at home close to nature. Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. |

Quoting: snowblind Northern Ontario Newfoundland Northern manitoba or sakatchewan In Ontario, Niagara, extremely cheap real estate, fun towm with tourists from all over the world. I am going there when I get back from overseas. northern ontario is cheap and beautiful, but by north I mean north of sudbury. Great outdoors life newfoundland, cheap because of economy, but good people and good quality of life. others = cheap and far removed from world, lonely unless you find someone to shack up with and live the dream. Also many places in BC. Anything on Vancouver Island or in the kooteneys. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 53529115 United States 03/18/2014 08:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I want a log cabin in some woods by a small lake, any ideas? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48401207 Am in same position as Op Come to the rolling hills of rural Estill County, Kentucky where "the Bluegrass kisses the mountains". We have plentiful rainfall, ample sunshine, gentle breezes, verdant green grass, hardwood forests with native hickory (pecan family) nut trees, maple sugar trees, sassafras trees, pawpaw (tropical) fruit trees, wild blackberries and blueberries, ground cherries, spring onions, mallard ducks, Canadian geese, grouse, wild turkey (Capital of the World), white tailed deer, award winning catfish, big mouth bass, and beautiful horses. We also have friendly, patriotic, God-fearing people who make excellent neighbors, know all the old pioneer/mountain skills, and are not afraid to take a stand and defend their own. We are also known for our old-fashioned country maids who raise a large vegetable garden, aren't afraid of hard work, do extensive canning, make homemade candies and wine, and are able to field dress/smoke/cook any kind of meat. If that's not enough, come for the inexpensive land/real estate prices, the stunning vistas around every corner, the abundance of fresh water sources (rivers, streams, natural springs), and an inexhaustible supply of firewood. Any questions? |

Quoting: Otsana do you want to live off the land? live in a small town? rural area? mountains or ocean? lots of things to consider! good luck in your journey!! Good questions. I'm leaning towards mountains I think. Mountains are just so beautiful. I really dig that kind of terrain. I'd not have a problem with a small town; but certainly don't wanna go bigger than that. Might even have a chance meeting a lady in a small town area lol. Who knows. All it really needs to be is peaceful. I can't do this life anymore. The simple living is calling me and has been for a while now. I've worked very hard to get to where I could make a move and I'm almost there. Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. |

signalfire User ID: 10716300 United States 03/18/2014 09:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Then, do you want to leave the US or stay inside the borders? How far do you want to be from shopping or social activities? Colleges, young people? What kind of government will feel right to you? Another country might sound great, but will they want you? Most have rather strict rules about immigration and people coming in and taking jobs from locals. If you're wanting to leave the US check out ex-pat forums, there's dozens of them all touting their particular favorite place but with good info also. Finally, if you want to live off the land but also are interested in an income, research aquaponics; it's the new new thing :) Can be done anywhere, on bad land or even a parking lot, in a desert, etc, and uses ~5% of the water of regular farming, produces organic produce and protein. |

Sinclair, Sandpoint, Idaho is it. use the search engine here on GLP :) it's magical. I don't get this magical mystique lately. I've been there more than a few times. It's nice. It's a pine forest in the mountains next to a lake. It's nice. It's real cold in the winter. There are no jobs. And it's very expensive. |

Hannah User ID: 46628140 United States 03/18/2014 09:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I also think it's a good idea to travel and sample your favorite few areas from the list. The air travel is expensive, but the rest can be done on little to no money by volunteering at farms and such- Here's a great resource- workaway.info And although living on the land is wonderful in many ways, it can definitely get lonely without a friend or a partner. Or some reasonable access to a fun little town. :D You should have no problem finding a woman when it's the right match. You seem very kind and interesting. And you must have strong character to have paid off student loans and be saving up money, and making plans. That's HOT! It's difficult out there, that's no small feat! A man who can do that can provide for a family. And I remember you posting some nice respectful things about relating with women on other threads. I'm a fan of yours. :) |
