It is most common in the eastern temperate states (DeVries, 1992). Freshwater jellyfish are now common in temperate climates almost globally, occurring frequently in North and South America, Eurasia and Australia (Acker and Muscat, 1976; Pennak, 1989). Although it has been recorded in tropical locations, including the Hawaiian island of Maui, the states of Nuevo Leon and Sinaloa, Mexico and the Natal Midlands, South Africa, its extent and status in tropical climates is not well known (Edmondson, 1940; Guajardo et al., 1987; Rayner, 1988; Eldredge, personal communication, 2002, Moreno-Leon, personal communication, 2007).
