Unfortunately, it doesn't work quite like that.

Darkweb CP sites get taken down by LEA almost every year or so, for the past decade.

Most of the community knows by now not to share PII (personally identifiable info) with anyone, and to assume everyone is a cop. A site gets taken down, the community moves on to the next site.

However, there are ALWAYS some who are either too dumb or careless to use that common sense. That web of stupidity covers only a certain % of the community, who they call the "low hanging fruit".

They keep LEA looking like they're accomplishing something, making arrests. That way police aren't driven to partner with ISPs and/or the NSA for correlation attacks.. which are literally the Achilles' heel of the darkweb.

The fact that they don't resort to that already i think says something. though i'm not sure exactly what.

To explain how powerful a correlation attack is...

Most of these darkweb sites reveal some kind of public indication of the time that a user is active. For example: if they post a message or upload a file, the message or file always shows the timestamp of when it was posted.

With help from a few large ISPs, or a Five-Eyes uplink, LEA can check what ISP subscribers were connected to a darkweb access point (with Tor e.g., a guard node) during each and every user-associated timestamp found through the site.

Continue doing this over a period of weeks, building up a dataset.

VERY quickly, the dataset will reveal what ISP subscriber (including home address, etc.) is CONSISTENTLY connected during the time when a given username is active on the site.

Statistically, this should take only a few samples for each username.

Those stats then provide the police with Probable Cause to take out mass search warrants. Very few users are both smart and diligent enough to use an amnesic OS. i.e. There WILL be forensic evidence of possession on their Windows 10 / macOS / Ubuntu system files.
