Quoting: GUAM USA I decided to bring my family of 5 to the remote island of Guam. That decision had it's ups and downs - been here for 24+ years now - I want to think I made the right choice for me an my wife. Been married for about 33 yrs to a girl I met in Korea - I will never leave her - ever. My boys (3 of them) make more money a month than I ever had ( except when I ran a Beach Bar). Anyway, quit judging me because I claim Guam is my home - it is a US Territory and all of us here are US Citizens. Not true. I've friends from Guam, most of them lived on Adak as well. I retired as an E4. I almost moved to Hi, the big island. I spoke with many people about that. "Island Crazy", was my consensus. Most of them couldn't handle it, after about five years. It's not for everybody. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72742829 United States 08/07/2016 12:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unfortunately a lack of education results in most Americans not knowing that Guam is a US Territory. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19007330 It is the same with puerto rico...I had a racist uncle who looked like I had smacked him in the face when I explained that puerto rico has been part of the US since 1898. But I have no negative feelings toward Guam, and I think Guamites? Guamians? Guambatas? are just as valid in their "americaness" as someone from vermont. All told (public and private) the United States spend more money on the education system than the military. Therefore it isn't the lack of education that is at fault. The what's being taught that is at fault. Here's why........ |

Maybe because I am military retired myself and know about Guam and have friends who were stationed there - I don't think anything less of seeing that flag as an identifier. Since you have been there a while - and maybe feel a bit out of touch with CONUS I will remind you how diverse this place is and people treat each other here pretty crappy sometimes depending on what NFL team you are for, what state you are from, what accent you have - etc etc etc. So cheer up friend - we are ALL discriminated against for something. The place is pretty small and it probably a lot of military off limits places making it feel even smaller. One map says it's 210 square miles which would be about 10 miles by 21 miles if it were a rectangle. How much does it cost to travel to other places if you feel like a change of scenery? It looks pretty far away from places like Japan and Australia. Last Edited by Booger Cancer on 08/07/2016 01:28 PM Yes, I did cure my Stage 4 cancer in two weeks when I was 48. I also reversed my chronic kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) when I was 25. In neither case were any medical treatments involved. |

Quoting: Booger Cancer How much does it cost to travel to other places if you feel like a change of scenery? It looks pretty far away from places like Japan and Australia. These are excellent questions for the Island peoples - I have a very good friend who lived in the Virgin Islands for 14 years - and she says yes - eventually you will succumb to Island fever. As she put it, yes it was beautiful but you can only go to the same beach so many times. The irony behind this is most people live 99% of their life within 30 mile radius. But I think its the IDEA you can just get in your car and drive further that keeps the fever at bay. I lived in Rural Maine and to get much of anywhere different was a 2 hour car drive to even begin to hit Novelty. I got isolation fever. So from that experience think I'd not last very long at Island life. I also learned I do not enjoy living in a place where the "locals" don't like you very much - that feeling gets old fast. |
