I was under the impression that Jesus specifically and frequently reminded his followers that the earth and it's history are essentially unimportant and essentially temporary and nothing more than a way station to somthing bigger.

You dont need an old testament to believe in the new testament mostly because none of the things in the old are valid from Christs perspective.
