I don't like it. Not at all.

But I'm too apathetic to feel hatred at the moment..but when I do..it is rather violent...with little care for mercy after gaping at the pure stupidity I've witnessed over the last few months.

At this point..I think people deserve this.


Not the ones that will be caught up in the wave..but those that perpetuated the political nonsense during a worldwide pandemic.

Remember when I said I understood that scene in One Hundred Years of Solitude when they mowed down all the protesters with mini-guns after I saw that image of the Burnside Bridge in Portland?

I meant every word.

Mr. Herbert is a gringo who showed up at the Buendía house for lunch one day. After tasting the local bananas for the first time, he arranges for a banana company to set up a plantation in Macondo.

The plantation is run by the dictatorial Jack Brown. When José Arcadio Segundo helps arrange a workers' strike on the plantation, the company traps the more than three thousand strikers and machine guns them down in the town square.

The banana company and the government completely cover up the event. José Arcadio is the only one who remembers the slaughter. The company arranges for the army to kill off any resistance, then leaves Macondo for good.

That event is likely based on the Banana massacre, that took place in Ciénaga, Magdalena in 1928.

Banana Massacre

General Cortés Vargas, who commanded the troops during the massacre, took responsibility for 47 casualties. In reality, the exact number of casualties has never been confirmed. Herrera Soto, co-author of a comprehensive and detailed study of the 1928 strike, has put together various estimates given by contemporaries and historians, ranging from 47 to as high as 2,000. According to Congressman Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, the killed strikers were thrown into the sea. Other sources claim that the bodies were buried in mass graves.

Among the survivors was Luis Vicente Gámez, later a famous local figure, who survived by hiding under a bridge for three days. Every year after the massacre he delivered a memorial service over the radio.

Another version by official Jose Gregorio Guerrero gave the number of dead as nine: eight civilians and one soldier. Guerrero added that Jorge Eliécer Gaitán had exaggerated the number of deaths.

The press has reported different numbers of deaths and different opinions about the events that took place that night. The conclusion is that there is no agreed-on story, but rather diverse variations depending on the source they come from. The American press provided biased information on the strike. The Colombian press was also biased depending on the political alignment of the publication. For example, the Bogotá-based newspaper El Tiempo stated that the workers were within their rights in wanting to improve their conditions. However, since the newspaper was politically conservative, they also noted that they did not agree with the strike.

The scariest part of this pandemic for me, has always been fear of starvation. While I'd like to believe that food supplies will remain consistent through the Winter..the anxiety is still very much there.

Any attempts at hoarding more food, is blocked..with the 'we have enough' survival food..bit.

Such that my relationship to food has changed in the last 5 months. I feel very appreciative and take a lot of time and put effort into my dinners and the images remind me. I think they're beautiful.


Need to explore new recipes and options. Zucchini soup will be coming shortly as soon as I have too many to eat.
