Re: Mad World
The scariest part of this pandemic for me, has always been fear of starvation. While I'd like to believe that food supplies will remain consistent through the Winter..the anxiety is still very much there.

Any attempts at hoarding more food, is blocked..with the 'we have enough' survival food..bit.

Such that my relationship to food has changed in the last 5 months. I feel very appreciative and take a lot of time and put effort into my dinners and the images remind me. I think they're beautiful.

Need to explore new recipes and options. Zucchini soup will be coming shortly as soon as I have too many to eat.

Thread: We have Taco Bell in the UK
"I don't know what happened but the food changed somewhere around 19xx"

Gather 'round, children, I will tell you a tale.

From 1988 to 1991 I worked at Taco Bell and was a front-line witness to it's demise.

When I first started there, I would show up around 7am and would take heads of real lettuce and run them through the shredder.

A giant block of real cheddar cheese was next quartered up and shredded.

Real Sour cream was taken out of a giant food service bin and loaded into the cylinders for the sour cream gun.

Real tomatoes were diced, real green onions were sliced. Red sauce was water mixed with seasonings.

Beans were real, made with lard in the pressure cooker.

Grade A Beef was real and cooked in big pans by real people.

Every taco shell was fried on site, every nacho chip, every pizza layer, taco salad bowl, etc.

Steak came in trays and was pre-scored and marinated and was real Beef. Chicken came the same way.

The 49 cent taco was introduced and soon everything went to hell...

Beef started coming pre-cooked in bags you warmed up by placing in a hot bath. No longer beef, totally but oatmeal/beef/soy concoction.

Beans became some freeze-dried noodle looking thing you had to reconstitute in boiling water.

Real sour cream was replaced by reduced fat (fake) Sour cream.

Cheese was replaced with reduced fat (fake) cheese that came already shredded (with aluminum to keep separated)

Green onions and black olives went away entirely

Lettuce and tomatoes now pre cut in bags with preservatives.

All shells pre-fried. Just put'em under the heat lamp to revive them.

Steak and Chicken replaced with blocks of particle meat more akin to dog food than any actual product. By the time I went into the Army Taco Bell had been destroyed by greed and penny pinching under the new owners, Yummy Brands.

---

You can still get the old-school Taco Bell treatment from Del Taco, though their seasonings and sauces just aren't as good as Taco Bell's used to be.

Everything you love will be ruined in your lifetime.
 Quoting: Ever_the_Meridian

I worked at Taco Bell for 3 months the Summer I turned 15. 1992. Can confirm on the, boiled meat packets, rehydrating the beans.

I applied on a dare and was hired on the spot..and then decided to go with it for a while. Not a good experience overall.

I think you're right on, with the timing.

[link to m.youtube.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Seer777

Taco Bell in the 80s and early 90s was good. I still remember how the restuarants use to smell, in the 80s.

The food took a major downturn, when Taco Bell went crazy with Chihuahua commercials..and now it is inedible..and has been for going on 2 decades.

Anyone want some old Taco Bell?
[link to imgur.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Seer777

Taco Bell was ruined when PepsiCo bought them back in the 90's. They bought up KFC, taco Bell, pizza hut all so they could get Pepsi cola into fast food. Up until then they all served coca cola.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75372920

Yes. That makes perfect sense. I recall how hard PepsiCo was hitting the Youth in 91.

There was a Pepsi/Coke blind taste test at the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. We waited in line for a tiny cup of Pepsi and Coke and plastic card that said License to Chill..if you guessed right.

We were incentivized to choose Pepsi...which I then did, through college, before I gave up soda altogether..

Thread: Pizza Hut’s Largest U.S. Franchisee Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

NPC International, the largest U.S. franchisee of Yum Brands’ Pizza Hut, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday.

The company operates more than 1,200 Pizza Huts and nearly 400 Wendy’s restaurants.

In contrast to most of the restaurant industry, Pizza Hut is one of the rare companies to report same-store sales growth in April and May, thanks to higher digital and delivery sales. But the coronavirus pandemic follows years of slumping U.S. sales for Pizza Hut, and NPC has struggled with a debt burden of roughly $1 billion.

“While NPC’s Chapter 11 filing was expected, we view it as an opportunity to create a better future for NPC’s Pizza Hut restaurants,” a Pizza Hut spokesperson said in a statement. “As NPC works through this process, we support an outcome resulting in an organization with a lower, more sustainable level of debt, ownership focus on operational excellence and a greater level of restaurant investment.”

Other than a few falls she quickly recovered from..she still lives next door, doing her thing. She still brings over brownies and today a bag of strawberries. I considered making her a cake but I was told it was covered.

I might make one anyway..

When you run a business.. money is coming in..but it always going out. It's basically just switching hands and trying to keep afloat while maintaining a certain lifestyle.

Now I don't have business expenses going out..so the money is just sitting there. I don't think this thing will even be partly over until maybe..this time next year.

That's how it feels at the moment. Basically just hoarding it, spendimg as little as possible for whatever nightmare comes next.

In the meantime I can dream of cake..and maybe make one.

I'm in a good spot really..one I considered over countless scenarios over the years..which included pandemic and pandemonium in my musings.

Oregon was the second state to shutdown..and shutdown hard. While it has been devestating, our numbers of CV-19 are quite low. My town had 19 active cases last I looked a couple days ago.

Yesterday it became mandatory statewide to wear a mask outside..so restrictions are getting stricter.

We have Califonia to the South and Washington to the North.

We're doing okay here. All things considered.

Re: Mad World
Id be interested in getting an antibodies test.

After my last trip to the grocery store in January..I got super sick to my stomach for days..I even mentioned it here. It was awful.

Then some weeks later..I developed red spots all over the bottom of my feet. The next day no joke..I saw a thread about red spots appearing on kids' feet with Covid. They looked identical. Shortly after all the skin began to peel off my palms and bottom of my feet..which I also mentioned..look like a chemical burn.

Then I got a rash.

One I am still fighting but finally getting control of. I saw an article regarding 'Covid-rash'..just a couple weeks back.

I have never had the skin peel from my hands and feet in my life..and have never had a rash. No fevers though or loss of taste or smell. 1dunno1

On that final day I went grocery shopping in January, I passed an Asian lady and her young son that was dragging his hand along all the food products.

I remember feeling startled and suddenly ashamed that I was profiling her in such a manner. One of the reasons I mentioned how racism would make a resurgence back in January.

While it is unlikely I could have caught the Covid back in January..I'd still be interested in an antibody test.
