How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
[link to www.citypages.com]

Your short rib arrives at the table and it’s more fat than lean and inedibly salty. Now what?

Do you:

A. Suffer quietly, tell your server everything is “fine,” and then leave a bad tip and a worse Yelp review?

B. Push the meat around the plate, try to bury it under the greens, and bring the $26 entree home to the dog?

C. Look your server in the eye and tell him something is not right, allowing the kitchen to rectify the situation?

We all know the answer. While it’s the most obvious answer, it’s also the most difficult to do.

Tell your server it is not tasty explain why.

Ask for the bill

And leave

If he offers to get you another just say no thanks and wish him or her luck with the business and never go there again.

You can tell people about your experience and review it but iD be brutally honest.

they always spit in Whitey's plates.

"Once he told of his days as a waiter at the Jack Tar Hotel in his home town of Greenville, S.C. Just before leaving the kitchen he would spit into the food of white patrons he hated and then smilingly serve it to them. He did this, he said, "because it gave me psychological gratification.""

Damn I remember getting a burger once, and the lettuce had bugs on it. They offered a dessert, but I just wanted to get out of there. I looked at reviews afterward, and they were really bad.

Oh well minor stuff I understand. I took my son down the road just last week to this you know American restaurant...I really did not see anything I wanted but I went with the philly cheese steak cause I love them...when the cooks can get it right.

What they brought to my table I could not believe. It was on a sub roll swimming in grease I mean it was bad, then they there was this massive glob of mozzarella cheese just sitting there on top.

I mean how can you being a cook send that shit out to a paying customer? I would never!

So I sent it back waitress said do you want to order anything else. I said no thank you. By that time I was over it ya know. The place was packed I was not waiting another 15-20 minutes...so I went home and fried up an egg and cheese sand...

chuckle

Well at least Em liked his pancakes...lol

or Option D:

- Stop eating at restaurants.

With all of the vile rumors being spread about what happens to food well before it gets to your table, no one in their right minds would waste money on restaurant food.

Be wise. Cook at home.

I've worked restaurant kitches. NEVER never never send your food back. The worst I saw was the cool coming down from Ecstasy take two steaks, plop them on ye kitchen floor, stand on them and then meat-skate all over the food prep area...And then cook the steaks up some more. The customers ate those fucking steaks.

Re: How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
One of the nicest Restaurants worth mentioning was in Groningen and it served real Italian food..no pizza's and that stuff. I recall they had less than 10 small tables.

It was a small restaurant and very visible, not elevated, was the cook. He was bald(no hair in my food please), worked very hard, did everything by hand , plate by plate, after he had finished preparing one plate he cleaned the whole small stainless steel work-surface.

That food was good and perfect food, no tricks, everything crispy fresh, no pre preparing, and no spitting.

take care

man there are not a lot of those places around anymore. Nobody cares...they hire cooks with no passion. I understand it might be hard to find a good cook...but shit even I not being trained anywhere can put out better shit than 95% of these places. There is no where I like to go out to eat anymore. I mean Olive Garden....or there are really nice restaurants in Buffalo. I never get to those though...

I had a friend like that. She would MAKE the waitress go back and go back for shit all the time.

I would say, "Why don't you just use your fork" or something if she was asking for a spoon....

She would say, "I like making them EARN their money."

After I heard her say that, and saw that that was exactly what she was doing, I quit accepting invitations to eat out with her. She was just being a bitch to them....and acting like she was superior.

Normally if a restaurant is only a few weeks open, they are the best. They want to impress the customers.
That is the moment you should visit them.

Otherwise it will be on the recommendation of a friend that knows its food and has more or less the same expectations.

Last route, but expensive, follow the Michelin guide.

Re: How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
I like steak well done. I ordered a steak and specified that I wanted it cooked completely. When the food arrived, my steak was so under cooked that I didn't even have to cut into it to notice.

I felt bad asking the waiter to take it back because he seemed overwhelmed with the dinner crowd.

He knew that I felt bad, and he took it back and had the chef put it back on the grill until it was cooked correctly.

He must have told the chef that I felt bad, because he came out and brought the steak to me personally.

He told me that, as a chef, he would rather have a person send food back that isn't properly cooked then have them just eat it anyway, because he wants to make sure that he and his staff are offering the most excellent and accurate service. He was really nice.

I always worry about the spit thing, I guess you have to gauge the overall atmosphere of the place. And if you do return food, do it very nicely.

Re: How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
I'll eat or push the bad food around the plate, pay the bill, then ask to speak with the manager. Generally the manger wants return customers, and word of mouth is important. I'll explain the problem, saying I don't want a free meal, but thought he would like to know the product the kitchen is serving. Sometimes its even after I get home. Sometimes the manager will comp a meal on my next visit, if they don't I don't go back. I am willing to give the restaurant another chance, esp if they have a good reputation. Nothing human created is 100% perfect.

Re: How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
When I was younger and going to school I worked for Darden restaurants, ie Red Lo ster and Olive Garden , and for awhile I worked at Jays Seafood i..the Oregon district ( about 3 yrs at Jays , and 6 yr at Darden) and as a bartender and server at all 3 places I can tell you I NEVER witnessed anyone EVER spitting in a customers food.

It would have been lights out for the dirt bag that did this to a customer... Believe it or not alot of places have people with scruples that work for them.and when you pick your food up in the kitchen you are in front of many people and line cooks and even IF you did do it someone would rat you out so , not likely. Now I can see this going on at smaller dives and burger joints but NOT at bigger places.

Being that I once had to bust my ass for every tip and getting $2.01 an hour I AM one of those people who expect my table to be " prebussed", and have my food checked on 3 min after its been delivered to the table, and I expect refills, ect, in return I have no problem leaving a great tip for them. I've only ever sent food back 2 or maybe 3 times in my life and that was for being cold and undercooked, but I was never unkind or mean about it. No need for all that nonsense. ..but as a server you get some REAL ASSHOLES and you know how you deal with a beligerant asshole???
You KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS!!!

It's almost like sheer torture for some of them, like heaping coals of hot fire on their head or something , they can't wait to shut up! Others will turn suddenly nice but I've never had anyone argue with me and tell me to.STOP BEING SO NICE to them. Lol

Re: How to send back restaurant food without being labeled a jerk
My mother in law is a total biyotch this and many other ways. She once worked as a maitre d and so is a total know it all. ALWAYS sends food back and with the worst smarmy critique, makes me worry about the security of my order.

In order to eat out with her the last time, I insisted we reserve the seats,"to avoid the wait like last time". And, especially that I make the call. Which I did and specified exactly what they could expect. They knew her for sure and appreciated the heads up. Also, I specified that I would be paying and that any food she rejected would just be given to me instead of sent back.

It was brilliant! She was treated with foreknowledge so EVERYTHING was perfect. Water glasses filled to the exact level,3/4" below the rim, all utensils perfectly placed, etc. The bitch still found fault with the pickle being served on top of the pulled pork sandwitch (pun alert) she ordered, not at the side. Makes the bread sort of soft, doncha know? I just pointed to the place next to my ribs, plunked down some cash, to show I was paying and directed the waitress to make another for dear Mother, no problem, I was hungry. Then, before she could squawk a peep, I told her to be sure to look at the next one for any fault, because I could eat that one as well. Shut her up but good.

Havn't been burdened with another dinner date with her since.
