REAL math, just for FUN
At work, we try to keep the math going, 90% of my job is math related, and we end up testing each other.

This problem actually happened at work, and was solved (roughly) without a calculator. I’ll take a rough answer, or an exact amount.

You have a 30’ pipe, 6” round on the inside, and it’s full of water.

What does the total volume of water weigh?

Cubic inches in US gallon = 231

Find volume of pipe....

Radius X Radius X Pi = 28.26 square inches
Length of pipe into inches = 360 Inches
Volume of pipe = 10,173.6 cubic inches

Pipe volume / gallon volume = 44.04 gallons

Gallon of water weight = 8.34 pounds

Total weight of volume of water = 367.30lbs.

The answer at work was 350lbs.

my mistake - I think its 60 kilo not 30 simply because a 2ltr bottle of pop is just about a foot and therefor would be 60 not 30

1 litre of water weighs exactly 1 kilogramme

My math says it would be 166 liters, but that’s with using US gallons.

Which is also 166 kilos.

cool but, I wish you would have specified the 6" round was radius.

Could have been diameter or circumference for all we knew.

If I knew radius, I would say....

6" * 3.14 * 2 * 30 = roughly 100 cubic feet of water?

100 * 60lbs = 6,000 lbs of water

Alright, I can see where you’re at.

I was the guy at work who figured this out, and my boss was both impressed and upset. Impressed I was right, and upset he was sooooo wrong. We had a cart with a 400lbs load rating, and I said it was fine to drain the 30’ pipe into, but he was going crazy and didn’t believe me.

Anyways, for next time, for rough math....

A gallon is 231 cubic inches, but round it to 250 for easy math

Pi is 3.14, but round it to 3 for easy math

This is kind of math is easy to do, easy to remember. Helpful if you got to fill a pool and want to guess how much water you need, or if your filling in a large hole with dirt.

Just hard to get used to.

Celcius too. If you say it’s 39c outside, I’m gonna have to think for a minute to figure out how hot that is.

Americans just have no concept of metric shit.

I deal with imperial and metric at work, and when it comes down to .005 microns, I still gotta figure out how many thousandths of an inch that is.

Re: REAL math, just for FUN
I started with 6" around to be the circumference

2(pi)r = 6
(Pi)r =3
r = 3/(pi)

Area = (pi) [3/(pi)]^2

Now I have the area in square inches. Multiply by length...

If I were playing with paper and pencil or my NSpire/TI-89 I'd convert to metric to make the conversion to weight easier.

I do a lot of math too.
