A TINY island in the Pacific Ocean is the site of a huge discovery that has been described as a “game changer”.

Japanese researchers have mapped vast reserves of rare-earth elements in deep-sea mud — enough to feed global demand on a “semi-infinite basis”, according to a new study published in journal Scientific Reports.

The deposits, found within Japan’s exclusive economic waters, contain more than 16 million tonnes of the elements needed to build hi-tech products from smartphones and radar devices to missile systems and electric vehicles, according to the study.

This will take time to extract, we could be done by then.

"Finding" them, deep in the ocean, is NOT the same as having an active mine ON LAND to mine them from.

It will probably take at least 5 years for them to even do a preliminary test about how to get those minerals out of the deep ocean muck. It will then take 10-15 years before commercial mining size extraction can even START to occur.

What the world needs is to find a mine source on land in North America - or barring that at least South America, both places with long established trade patterns with the America's and Europe and places that are not on the other side of the Pacific.

On Land Mines can be brought on line much more quickly. The technology is already well known and easy to deploy. Cross your fingers that prospectors can find new ON LAND sources of these minerals.

2 things:

rare earth minerals are not rare, despite the name. Many countries have them, just historically it has not been overly profitable to start mining them. That's changed past few years.

This Japan deposit was known/discovered 5 years ago.

the article's end was all about how recent recovery methods have been figured out and these rare earths are really everywhere
