There was no refugee "problem" either.

The Saudis hated Papa, it was no secret. He had very few friends in this world. During our time together his anxiety could be terrible, he always felt like someone was after him. I suppose he had good reason.

I remember reading that Papa wanted an investigation opened into the Kennedy assassination, he felt very strongly about it, as he did many things. This always made him a target.

Edit ~ As an adult I wish I’d of asked him about all of these things during our time together, I would have loved to have heard his musings. That being said I’m sure he would have rather talked about romance and our companionship than stressful things, he needed a break.

Yes, just not under the pretense that I was going to be potentially married off. My father had a drug habit and was undoubtedly high when he sold me. When I returned to him at the end of the week he asked me if I learned anything. I was like ‘huh?’, apparently he thought some people had payed him to let me go to a symposium on the benefits of Islam for women and to study the Koran. I didn’t dispute this fact, my father had a volatile temper, last thing I needed was him to make a scene.

He thought he’d been payed for me to learn about the Koran. Papa said he’d send for me when he got all of the legalities sorted out, and he’d pay my father the rest of my bride price when I arrived in Libya. (It would have looked bad for him to leave the summit with the daughter of a diplomat without the proper paperwork.) I got his letter and documents five months later and my father found out what had happened. Up until that point is lied and said I got pregnant by someone I met while we were living in Malta, drunken one night stand I said.

The summit we attended had nightly reception dinners, I went with my father the opening night. Now, I’d had a crush on Papa since I was like 10 or so, so I was curious to see him. The Libyan table was perhaps four tables across from ours, I kind of leaned back in my chair to stare. I suppose he got the feeling someone was watching him, he looked up and around a minute before looking at me. I was embarrassed and immediately looked away. I waited for what seemed like a minute and looked back at him, he was staring at me fairly intently, we looked at each other for a little while and then he looked away. I’m assuming it was easy to figure out who I was and where I was staying. Only anout a dozen Americans were there.

Well, I had fallen in love with Papa and men just...weren’t interesting to me to be frank, I felt like I was being unfaithful to him.

My first ‘boyfriend’ was a coworker of my father. He was about twenty years older than me, French ancestory, he asked me out on a date when I was 17. My father didn’t know about our relationship, but he knew I had ‘friends’ so he’d let me go out in the evenings. I was enrolled in a prep school here at home and he (my ‘boyfriend’) would pick me up after school and we’d go get ice cream and stuff. He was always trying to put his arm around me and I was always uncomfortable. I really just wanted a friend because I didn’t get along with my peers. I was never around people my own age and they were foreign to me.

One night he took me to a bar, weird thing is nobody asked me for ID or anything, I was even in my uniform. I had a couple of drinks and started to feel sick, I think he put something in my drink because the world felt like it was at a perfect angle and I kept wanting to fall over. I asked to go home, instead he took me to a motel. I remember feeling like my legs were made of jelly or something, I tried to fight him off, but couldn’t. I remember him getting a condom and saying ‘better not fuck you raw, who knows what diseases you have now whore.’ I cried for Papa during the whole encounter, it was like I kept waiting on him to come and save me. My ‘boyfriend’ put a pillow over my head to make me stop. He dropped me off at my house when he was done, I never spoke to him again, nor did I tell my father. Turns out they were drinking buddies and he knew about me and Papa. I felt disgusting, stayed in the shower all night, I wondered if Papa would even want me anymore. I tried to run away the year after.

My second boyfriend was in college, I was 19 or 20, He was 26, Italian. We dated about six months, again I never felt comfortable, it felt wrong. Eventually I went to meet his parents, that night he tried to have sex with me, I said I can’t. He called me frigid and we broke up the next week.

My last boyfriend was during my undergrad years, I was 22, he was my professor, 46, of Egyptian ancestry, newly divorced. I enjoyed his companionship as a friend and he was very kind to me, but I never got over that nagging feeling of it not being ‘right’, we had sex once, after nearly a year of dating. I insisted he use a condom, and it was dreadful, I just laid there staring up at the ceiling until he was done. Not long after I told him I couldn’t do it anymore and we parted ways. He was sad, I remember, he said it was obvious something bad had happened to me in my younger years and he hoped I could work it out. He told me he loved me. After my last attempt at normalcy I decided that I was in love with Papa and forcing myself to try to conform to society’s standards were just not working for me. My father had convinced me that Papa wanted nothing more to do with me, so I became celibate.

At this point in my life I don’t think I can say I’ll ever truly be happy, happiness is practically impossible without Papa by my side, but I am content. I’m content knowing I love him and he loved me. That love is enough to carry me through I believe.
