A Propane stove is a really good investment as well. Every winter we have power outages, and the burners of my stove still work to cook and keep the house from freezing. NOT natural gas (which blows up your house) but Propane.

It's really about putting a puzzle together. At some point you will seem some odd pieces fit the same puzzle that you just know are not coincidence. The whole observatory thing is one of them. It was so out of the ordinary and kept so quiet.

There are two paths-:

This issue about a possible attack on the US power grid has been addressed many times from the days of Bush but, the public kept hitting the snooze button. Improbable, impossible, not to worry, you know, the usual excuses. If there is no pressure on the government by its citizens to ensure security along with a Plan B and C to ensure continuance of service, nothing will be done about it. Instead funds have been squandered nilly milly to every soft social cause and idiotic study there is. We are in a quasi-civil war with internal sources that have their hand on a lot of buttons, will not hesitate whatever resource is available to do the most harm to President Trump.

To say that they hate the Trump Administration is a bit rundunant at this point, the core problem is that they are currently in a state of desperation because they are losing their grip on a lot of their power. Don't for one minute think that foreign enemies know this is a tremendous time to make a real dent in what now has turned negative for them by the US's nationalistic trend in the current gov't. Alls I'm saying is we are surrounded by a lot of angry and desperate enemies from all sides. Be aware, don't panic but, be aware and be ready. There is a very real possibility a blackout can occur especially in the dead of winter for maximum impact.

When I hear President Trump speak about it, then I will really take notice.

Look into rocket stoves for cooking and heat. Use a shitload less wood or you can even get pellets for them. You can get plans for then online and have a welder make you one or some people sell them online too fairly cheap.

Cut out an air intake hole on the bottom...and 2 notches in the top for smoke to exit.

I agree. I have a couple of nice ones. One is small and the other is like a combo (cook & heat). I can use the small cylinders or connect to larger cylinders.

If things were to get bad, I would head to dads property. He pumps oil and natural gas off the property. He gets all the free natural gas he wants.

Catastrophic power outages were also talked about during Obama era.

It's nothing new and we have known of this possibility for years. Many prepper's in the last decade. Stock up on canned goods and water or water purification. Oh, and if you live in cold climate, long johns.

THis just formalizes what everyone already knows so there is some kind of a piece of paper (study) the policy makers can rally around to actually make policy changes.

The commissions on EMP risk have basically stated these things too and that commission and study has been around for nearly a decade now.

I don't see this as some kind of "call to arms" I just see this as normal business on how policy gets done. IF you've not watched or been part of this process in the past, you could take these things out of context like something nefarious is brewing. This study is mapped to "Climate change" which is probably why it may get some traction, the EMP study (Which has a much higher probability of happening then something immediate from climate change) never got any traction.

What i find interesting about this particular report is they didn't even attempt to quantify or describe what happens when the power is out. If properly framed this is significant, no food, gas, Water, heat, communications infrastructure, computer infrastructure until the grid is back up. Not to mention the risk that nuclear reactors are net consumers of grid power when the reactor is shut down (this is needed to cool the stored spent fuel on site) Once the diesels at the power plants run out of fuel, those cooling ponds heat up and if not cooled down the casks will start cracking and burning spewing radioactive cesium into the air nasty stuff with a multi-generational half life.

I think something may be afoot.
It is incredibly easy to take down large segments of our power grid and countries like Russia, China and Iran have devoted large amounts of money to EMP weapons, while we...do nothing.

Might be the cost of draining the swamp. Prepping is always a good idea but globalisation has made everyone more vulnerable to systems failure.

I buy cheap 20lb propane tanks at yard sales if they're somewhat full and $5 and under. I use the propane in them for my grill, then swap them out at Walmart for a refilled and recertified tank that I then store for emergencies. You can pretty much go without everything but clean water and energy to cook/heat your supplies with.

Look at how long it's taken to rebuild Puerto Rico's infrastructure.

Taking out the big transformers at power substations would be catastrophic here. They have to be ordered probably at least a year in advance and be transported by rail they're so heavy. We'd be plain fucked for a long time, since we rely so much on electricity to even get "work" done.

LOL! I done this too. The cost of re certifying the tank id about the same as filling it. It's much easier to head to the hardware store to swap it out with a new one.

If you do a fire place have an insert so you can cook on it like a stove top. That’s what I have, but imo , for heat and cooking an old buck wood stove is the best.
