This actually sounds more like the NYPD being upset Waze is cutting into their money stream of stop and harass tactics since the state apparently has a tax revenue shortfall.

In central Virginia the police make it known days ahead of time on the local news where driver checkpoints will be located in an effort to actually inform the public so they will drive more safely.

What a joke request.

Not to mention DUI and similar surprise checkpoint detainment areas are ILLEGAL so its nice that this Waze app alerts us to illegal activity

Used waze to alert drivers to a freshly hit deer (it was huge like a trex) right in the left lane. I think I helped people avoid damage or an accident. I feel like a half assed hero of some type

Yeah, good luck with that, NYPD. This is protected free speech. I personally love it when people exercise their first amendment right to protect their fourth amendment rights, which is essentially what WAZE is.

A GPS app on my phone.

It tells you when police are coming up, when accidents are ahead, potholes or debris in road, etc.

It tells you your speed and the current limit.

And it gives highly accurate information. Like for instance, time of arrival. And it is always right.

Sounds like NYPD is a bunch of idiots. Police departments where I’m from simply remove the notification from Waze. It’s crowd sourced, so if you get a team of social media-specific officers go and remove all the checkpoint notifications, they’re golden.

*It's hilarious when the cops actually comment on Waze while they're doing radar.

Essentially, you would have to have an entire team, working around the clock, in busier cities.

The NYPD has no legal basis to say anything about this. There is no expectation of privacy - or actual privacy -- for ANY activity, engaged-in by ANY person/entity on any public street.


People are free to talk about what they see in public regardless of what their intent may be. Such utterances are protected free speech. Period. End of discussion.

What they are doing is no different than a buddy saying hey. Avoid 23rd street downtown theres a police checkpoint.

I for one am glad i live in a state where police traps are outlawed.

I don't feel like waiting for 15 minutes while a pig figures out who's drunk or not and pulls over cars for closer scrutiny.
