All by design, as we know. Orwell brilliantly described this self-perpetuating oppression in his book 1984 but most people who think of it today only remember the active physical oppression of individuals from without and not the self-inflicted one from within, because their society had taken away even the words to describe an alternative! What you cannot articulate, even to yourself, cannot exist in your reality!

As you say, Pooka, smartphones, game consols, TVs, etc. Wonderful tools, but here's the thing: reading a book makes you use your imagination to draw your own pictures, so to speak, its dimensions and complexity defined by the vocabulary available to us. That is very much a developed skill, similar to developing muscles and reflexes by physical exercise and it is the indispensable support of the resourcefulness we all need to survive the unexpected and terrifying as we encounter it. If we allow those 'muscles' to atrophy because somebody's doing the drawing for us all the time, to use a not-so-useless metaphor, we're definitely going to be caught with our pants down.

I find this entirely true, even in myself. I've been accused on this forum of, in effect, being an "intellectual snob", a "school teacher" and other such epithets. I've tried "dumbing down" some of my posts, which immediately had the effect of lightening the weight my comments should have had, even in my own mind as I searched for words which would be more acceptable to the complainers. No, not going there any more. If my posts seem over someone's head, better they not bother reading them, if they cannot take the time and effort to understand.

Those who do not read, have not read, have missed nearly all their intellectual growth and what a pity! No exercise of the imagination and, as you suggested, the lack of imagination will prevent having the best responses to any emergency these people face. Picture them running in circles loudly wailing "What to do? What to do?" Shame on every teacher who failed to give their students a love of reading.

We should probably get back to the subject of ebola here, Whispering Leaves - but I want you to know I enjoy your posts and am in agreement. Perhaps you could start a thread on the subject. Just PM me the link and I'll be there!

There's a medical prep exercise I use often because I have animals and have to stay organized without having a lot of space and I have a bad habit of squirreling away items just to get them out of the way, then can't find them:

Sit comfortably somewhere, close your eyes and locate all your medications, medical accessories (that means every band-aid) and protective gear everywhere in your home. I say comfortably because if you're not comfortable, you'll hurry the exercise and miss something. If you've lived there more than a year or two, that might be harder than you think.

If TSHTF in your area, you're on limited time to get yourself and your home ready and you don't want to be spending any of it looking for things. Moreover, if your living space is large, you can waste time running back and forth through corridors and up and down stairs, where Mr. Murphy awaits to trip you up.:) The mental exercise will show you any changes you need to make now for your safety.

Think about how and where you eat out.

Watch people carefully...if they use gloves and wash hands
then you can eat there. We have cut WAY back on dining out
and it's saving us money.

Watch out for fruit and Veggie stands or farmers markets.

These people need educated on how to handle cash and
fresh produce. Unfortunately most our off the list until
they can be turned around.

You always have such good ideas, my dear! Thank you for your input - organization could be critical - one example is that I knew I had a can of wasp spray yet had not searched it out, so yesterday I found it and placed it by the sliding glass door. Just in case of any "wasps", you know. Bear spray at the front door, in case of bears thinking to find honey in this house. Two doors organized. And yes, I do have other "things" for the purpose, but would like to manage with the least "oomph" possible to start with. Vacuum salesmen can be a little too persistent, so that's the reason, of course.

Love your "medical prep exercise" as it is very wise, and necessary. I need to do this, to know exactly where all the boxes of gloves are - need them in the car, the bathroom and "tucked away". Iodine - the kind we paint on our skin. Masks. Bandages - all in a super first aid kit I made for the car, which is right outside my door.

Need to put summer clothing in my "tsunami trunk" in the car, as I made it in very early spring.

Yes, watch carefully when you are shopping. Consider wearing gloves and spraying everything with a bleach solution when ou return home with your purchases.

I don't eat out, not even a fast food burger - cannot stand McD's pink slime in the first place, and I have known a couple people who have worked in such places - with the most disgusting personal hygiene habits you can imagine. Nope, not eating out. Also not ordering pizza.

Remember that the money for these would be better applied to food and other preparations.

When you get home with your fruits and veggies, most can be spraying with bleach solution, wait three minutes, rinse thoroughly and dry. Many hands touch these fruits and vegetables from the pickers in the field who have outhouses [at best] and no sinks in which to wash, to the bosses who run their hands through the bags and boxes, then the machinery, then the sorters, then the packagers. Produce items that are lined up in trays or on display tables are handled several times while putting up the displays. All those hands - YECCHHHHH

Update: basically the video said that the family was notified that the bodies were embalmed and that they were headed back to the US for further research, BUT then the families were notified that the bodies had decomposed so much that they now have to be cremated.

Why the change of story— if not for fear of further forensic investigation?

Note: we are about 60 years late with the ‘Kneegrowe warning US’....ebola would have never reached the US if we would have not let the black plague reach these proportions.

And Korea just banned all flights to Fiji...oh it's on for sure. There was a large rugby tournament going on during the stay of David and Michelle. How many rugby players and attendees now have the disease and are spreading it in their home countries? This is very creepy!

I have a prep item that no one can take away or destroy, and I can take it with me anytime. KNOWLEDGE

We know for a pure fact that something CAN happen to our preps, but if many folks here can please at LEAST do some study effort on the subject of survival, evasion, etc., it is a HUGE treasure in regards to life or death and it will lessen the worry in case folks are left with "nothing".

If anything, we have a small bag with several multi-tools, etc. and silent weapons that do not alert anyone else, and certainly do not need ammo. A gun is worthless without ammo if you find yourself having to travel on foot.

You are absolutely right! What's in our minds is our greatest treasure and preparation. Learn things, people! Learn many things! Learn how to start a fire under suboptimal conditions, how to purify water at least three different ways, learn how much water you need for cooking, drinking, bathing, laundry, cleaning, etc, per person per day. Learn how to use a hatchet and axe, and what they are.
