My yard is a fine mix, or a hot mess, depending on which neighbor you ask......it seems the clover is winning this year.

I love it, and so do the bees!

That I have heard of but never tried! When I was pretty young, my neighbors used to wilt them & serve with some kind of vinegar dressing I believe. I don't remember too much except that they were gross!

What is the tea good for? I "collect" natural remedies. I am big into essential oils.

It's anti-inflammation, mild-diuretic, aids, protects the function of the liver, kidneys and much more.

The dandelion root coffee substitute is awesome as long as you are well hydrated because it a very strong diuretic. This is a random grab but essentially correct...

We use manure and I also like worm casings for everything including the flower beds. Peat moss, pine needles, various things can address soil ph as well.

However, the italian parsley, dandelion, arugula and seeding-out cilantro make for a good substitute (c'mon, we need the fiber, esp. when it's tasty). "Best Ham and Swiss Ever!" was the report for this yard and "from the garden" mix.

It is amazing for all sorts of things...I will carry this on until I get through about a dozen plants for preppers that no one will even know about.

So much may happen here - from war to ebola to economic collapse to other epidemics and then there's the concern about food prices and lack thereof in stores due to our farm lands being decimated by incredible rains and flooding. Any one or more of these things could occur at any time.

We need to be thinking about what is available, close to home, that would be healthy for us, free, readily available, and smart to find.

Your thread is the first I've seen on GLP regarding such a wonderful dividend! I, too, have fussed about dandelions, and dug them out of my grass, and fussed more. Now I don't have a lawn, just black plastic covered by rocks, unfortunately. However, dandelions, at least the stronger varieties, manage to grow here anyway! I've pulled a few of the tougher, spikier ones, and they have roots thicker than my thumb! They have poked through rocks, plastic, hard ground, and are thriving! Time to see about harvesting some of them, rather than trying to rid the view of them! LOL

Lance, how are chances of you extending the subject by finding something that differentiates the types of dandelions? I wonder if all the parts of all the kinds are equal. For example, the kind I mentioned - with near thorns - are they equally to the sweet little light green dandelions?

I wasn't going to write this out tonight but I will try.
When I got my Permaculture Teachers Certificate (which I have never used) we had a good giggle over it.

A pioneer species (what many dolts who know little would call an invasive) has several attributes. Deep rooted, spiny, drought resistant and bloody hard to eradicate. Just as the Permaculture Designer is. SO if we take that from there, what else could we look at as a plant?

Here in the PNW everyone is looking at Scotch Broom and getting all upset by it even though it has dandelion growing like qualities except. It goes away when the native alder take over the plot. Now here is ther PFAFDB take on both plants.

So this plant, in clearcuts in BC [link to pfaf.org (secure)] Will pretty much stop the deer/elk from browsing on this plant [link to pfaf.org (secure)] which is the actual plant from here when we experience something like a large fire or a huge windblow. So, take that for what it is worth.

SO the next plant we should all look at is, foreign again. OMFG...there is a few caveats to this. One being aside from actually buying the seeds from [link to jlhudsonseeds.net] in the US, all the goji berries I tried to grow here that came in simple packaging from the US seemed to sprout then die off.

They grow like blueberries and are, very, very, very long lived. Upwards of a 150 years and more nutritious.

Goji's are hardy down to USDA ZOne 2 and can deal with USDA ZOne 9....wide spectrum hey...the story behind them is that the plants split in 2. There is the one that was grown in China/MOngolia, and the huns came to SOuthern EUrope and shat out the seeds so not there is a 'LYcium barbarum' from the SOuth East part of SOuthern EUrope. Ah, plant nomenclature. There is no difference. Cheerio until tomorrow.

On the list, bamboo (easily cooked shooting types), lovage and other perennial food plants that add the spice to life, and yes Pooka I forgot, how to make a perennial potato/no-dig bed. That lasted for me for 8 years...hint...you need comfrey for that!
