One slave in 1850 cost around $500. 10 times what a horse cost. Did ppl abuse their horses? By today's standards they weren't very nice but according to the times they generally took pretty good care of their investment. Yes there are always going to be sadists that love to beat what they can-human or animal-& the more rebellious ones did suffer greatly but in general it was a shitty but humane life if you kept your head down & did what you were told. Better in some respects than what some poor folks deal with today (& no I am not advocating for slavery, just noting some ppl today may have fewer essential needs met & more drugs & crime to deal with.)

My great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother was kicked out of Nova Scotia and lost everything when they burnt her house and loaded all the Acadians onto leaky transports and sent them, even splitting-up families, all over the Eastern Seaboard.

If she grew up in Canada, 17 years, how was she “bussed” anywhere?
I grew up in Central California and only bus was for everyone who lived too far to walk, period. We didn’t have forced integration, we were integrated.
I moved a lot as a kid and attended many schools. None were all white, black or anything. Her whole story is odd. If she is half Indian from India and half Jamaican from Jamaican slave owners lineage, how does that represent the unique American history! I am thinking BS.

We had free black men slave owners here in the US, too. It's just that history books don't mention that.

And if you get right down to it, most blacks in this country have slave-owner blood in them because back during that time period, it was pretty common for owners and overseers to rape women and for the women to trade sex for easier jobs. Granted, they cannot help their great (however many greats) grandmothers did not have a choice, but that still does not negate that their grandfathers were slave owners.
