The USA-China trade deficit is astronomical. Ever since Bill Clinton gave China "Most Favored Nation" status in the 90's, China has sucked trillions of dollars out of the US economy.

American jobs, infrastructure, and intellectual property has been given to China on a silver platter for 2 decades, making the USA poorer and weaker while strengthening and enriching China.

The USA is even shipping American-raised livestock to China to slaughter, so China gets to keep that meat and send the meat from slaughtered livestock that was raised in toxic conditions in China back to the USA for Americans to consume. In some cases, allegedly boneless chicken wings sent to the USA by China were found to be rat meat.

China is both robbing and poisoning Americans (and their pets) while producing dangerous, low-quality crap, like shoddy steel, that's causing bridges to collapse.

The trade deficit is unsustainable, and something had to be done about.

This wholesale robbery has been going on for so long that it can't be ended without some short-term pain for the USA, but the pain for China right now is much worse.
