I agree. You could turn your back for one minute, and a child could be gone. I just read about a recent cruise ship incident. Grandfather thought a window was closed as were all the others in the dining room. He sat the child on the window sill, and she fell to her death through the open window. I honestly cannot believe that someone can't tell if a window is open or closed, but I also can't imagine a grandfather purposely being that negligent. The grandparents were on the cruise with their children and grandchild. |

They should be more visible to the public. And i'm sure the manufacturer can think of a device that automatically stops the escalator similar to a pull cord at the top or bottom when something is caught or being sucked down into the ends where the stairs retract leaving a space. We have all kinds of technology today like light beam trips etc. |

Quoting: thetrickybigguy Happens WAY to fast. I was with my family at a mall in chicago when I was like 9-10. We were looking at something near an escalator, I took a step back to get out of peoples way and my back/butt hit the rubber hand grip- it grabbed me and with in a second I was almost straddle the rail and falling off. My dad luckily seen this happen and quickly grabbed me. Literally with from standing there to 3 seconds almost falling. If he wasn't with in arms reach already, I would have fell. |

Once he was lifted off the ground, he never let go except to try to do it at the top? That what it seems like to me. This video describes him trying to reach for something at the top, so it does not look as if his clothing was "caught" in anything. Kids do that all the time. They'll grab on to something and put both feet up in front of them as if to climb. That moving rail pulled him up. That's my theory. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76983809 That makes sense in this rotten world. Mom was ignoring the 3 children. The toddler caught the escalator up and at the top tried to grab the hand rail to get off and lost balance, tumbled to the bottom. CLT Airport escalators are very long and steep. |

A single mother, she had a 4, 3, and 2 year old with her. Apparently she was aware the three were near the escalator, but never thought of it being harmful. He wasn't entering the moving stair area. He was on the other side of the rail. Quoting: nutmeg It's unclear how he ended up at the top, but I'll bet he grabbed onto the moving hand rail with both hands and was pulled up that way?
