Makes me think of the differences between the hard-nosed approach of Chile's leftist President Salvador Allende and a similar reaction from that country's rightist Army Chief/President Augusto Pinochet in the early 1970s.

Heads were beaten and lives were lost in conflicts between the left versus the right. But the hardness of conservative/rightwinger Pinochet was a lot less mindless and brutal than the hardness of liberal/leftwinger Allende.

Rightwing Pinochet also left behind a society that was way more stable, humane and decent than what his leftwing counterparts had done.
