Farmers need to change the way they grow them. I used to dig trenches in the cold spring & throw the taters in, then cover with soil & compost, and more soil & compost as the plants grew.
Now with the ground frozen I would just put the taters on top of the ground & cover them with soil & compost (ABOVE the ground) & then maybe put some fencing up to hold it all in place.
But I don't garden anymore.
